About a third of US adults are now using AI chatbots for health information.
But only 18% think the answers are highly accurate.

So why do they keep asking? 🧵

I require my MLS students to subscribe to the News Literacy Project Newsletter (The Sift) for just this reason - they highlight current misinformation that the students might have already seen for use in a lesson without taking a lot of time to find/investigate/prepare something yourself.

A4: Start with media students encounter! Unpack a meme or viral video: Who made it? Why? What’s missing? Then have students create their own or design an ad to trigger a specific feeling. Creating media shows how easily messages can be crafted to manipulate us. #TLSkyChat

As AI becomes more common in classrooms, journalism education offers an opportunity to strengthen skills that require human judgment: asking thoughtful questions, evaluating sources, and considering different perspectives.

✔️ Misleading claims about voting machines changing votes have circulated since at least 2008.

❌ NO: This is not a legit video of the #Eiffel Tower collapsing in flames. It's AI-generated.

🤔 Pausing for a few seconds to ask "Really??" is a good first step to fact-check a viral claim.

🔎 Then examine the source - is it reputable? And seek out supporting evidence.
