(1/4) ICYMI, we recently published our Annual Registration Data Report, which shows that 293,778 out of the 867,935 professionals on the NMC Register are Black, Asian and ethnic minority professionals. That’s over a third of the Register for the first time.

(1/3) ICYMI, we recently published our Annual Registration Data Report, which shows that the NMC Register has reached a new record high of 867,935 professionals – but its pace of growth has roughly halved.

The Register grew by 1.7% in 2025-26, compared with 3.3% the previous year.

We welcome the Government’s call for evidence on the professions and roles which will in future be allowed to describe themselves as 'nurses'. 

We have long called for the title of ‘nurse’ to be protected in law. 

This will be achieved through long-awaited changes to modernise our legislation.
"Protecting the title of ‘nurse’ will help prevent its misuse, giving the public assurance that anyone calling themselves a nurse meets the high professional standards expected of the profession. Over the past 18 months, our Safeguarding Hub has reviewed more than 7,000 fitness to practise referrals.

We identified over 2,100 with potential safeguarding concerns - helping ensure people at risk of harm, abuse or neglect are identified early and supported.
