My Kenmore vacuum broke and is within the warranty period and I'm trying to find out how to claim it.

Seriously, Kenmore, WTF?

I searched for "Music" on my phone and Siri surfaced Spotify, YouTube Music, Triode, podcast episodes in Castro about music, I guess, and other stuff.

Everything but Apple's Music app. Had to swipe to the app drawer screen and search there.

Shrug.

Time Machine drive went to the great RAID pool in the sky, so I'm setting up home directory rsync to iCloud Drive while waiting for SSD prices to come down from the stratosphere.

The amount of rsync-choking magic Apple has sprinkled everywhere is amazing. And the caches, oh Lord, the caches!

Audio is obviously subjective, but the improvement in audio quality in the AirPods Non Pro 5 is is stunning. And how they made ANC work that well in open earbuds is close to magic.

Total step change.

PSA: If you're using Time Machine on a Mac any copy-on-write filesystems will explode in size, potentially filling your backup.

For example, ~/Library/Application Support/com.apple.container/snapshots if you're using Apple Containers.

This was very annoying to figure out.

Jill Lepore's The Rise and Fall of the Articial State traces the historical and cultural roots of our current tech overlords' dismal outlook on life, the future and AI. It's a thorough read and well worth your time.
The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State
"Much in history is headlong but few grand transformations have been more precipitate or more heedless than the rise of... the Artificial State," writes Jill Lepore in this passionate account of how rule by machine has ravaged the world. Inspired by Hannah Arendt's The Origins of Totalitarianism, which argued in 1951 that the machinery of modern life was reshaping the very fundamentals of human existence, Lepore, profoundly disturbed by the technology revolution and by the soulless inundation of artificial intelligence, unfurls a new history for our own twenty-first century. Building on an essay in The New Yorker in 2024, Lepore's clarion call traces our increasing dependence on and strangulation by data. Political campaigns, awash in an avalanche of fake bots, have been reduced to attention-mining algorithms, while multinational media corporations dictate public discourse, and the era of the liberal nation-state seems to be coming to a rapid end, replaced by billionaire technocrats reliant on autocracy and the tools of AI. With Orwellian overtones, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State demonstrates how technology has corroded global democracy, leading to the destruction of both human community and capacity for self-government, creating a new form of AI government, a digital citizen's assembly, where AI will recommend the course of action to humans in place of human-run legislatures. Especially sobering with this proliferation of "dizzying, ever-changing schemes, prophesies, and predictions" is that the Artificial State has come at the expense of the natural world, leading to catastrophic loss of wildlife habitat and biodiversity. Deliberately alarming, The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State, despite its abundance of dire facts, is not a funeral dirge; rather, it's an inspiring wake-up call, written in Lepore's typically elegiac prose, which demonstrates that nothing about the Artificial State was inevitable, for it is a "government without consent, even government without humans." It can, Lepore asserts, be dismantled. Other heinous systems, like feudalism, fascism, and slavery, have also been dismantled, but disassembly requires identifying the parts, tracing the sources. It requires telling a new history. This is the purpose of The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State.

From 2023, this lecture/rant from Bryan Cantrill is an excellent counterpoint to the hysterical AI doomerism from an engineer who knows how hard it is to build things:
Intelligence is not Enough | Bryan Cantrill | Monktoberfest 2023
One of the most common attitudes with respect to AI today is the so-called “doomerism,” the idea that AI technologies are inevitably fated to present an existential risk to humanity. This talk takes that idea on head first, systematically examining the theoretical risks versus the reality on the ground, taking a skeptical but thoughtful view to how we balance the potential of the technology with the varying risks AI may - or may not - represent.

Indigo really is a nice Bluesky/Mastodon app. They clearly take pride in their work. It's nice to see in these dark days of slop.
There are a million other changes and improvements throughout the app but those are the big ones.

Now that we have a more affordable plan for single-network users, we're hoping to spread the word far and wide. We'd really appreciate if you could give this thread a share.

Thanks

Wrote a little program to let me check if Pangram thinks URLs are written by a human or AI and tested it on my blog and yes, I am a human.

Nice to know.

But seriously, what a time to be alive that we need tools to check it things are written by humans or not.

Fascinating how many people wear over-the-ear headphones at the gym, especially since we're in a golden age of earbuds.

Not hating, whatever floats your boat, it just seems big headphones are objectively worse for the use case. And you know, sweat.

The third installment in the Ana and Din series is a wild ride.

A lot of history is depressing, but I think The Rest is History's episodes on The Troubles are some of the bleakest I've ever heard.

The implacable hatred and the sheer amount of terrible decisions are brutal.

Ann Leckie's Radiant Star continues the story of the Imperial Radch with what sort of feels like a chamber play that takes place on a completely insignificant planet drifting through the cold dark of space. A tasty snack for fans of the Radch.
Radiant Star
Check out Radiant Star -
Space opera's sharpest mind returns to the world of the Imperial Radch in this brilliant standalone from award-winning author Ann Leckie.
The Temporal Location of the Radiant Star has always been a source of both conflict and hope for the people of Ooioiaa. However, the imperial Radch see it only as an inconvenience, an antiquated religious site soon to be absorbed into their own, superior culture. But local politics is complicated, and the Radch have made a final concession: One last man will be allowed to join the mummified bodies in the temporal location to become a "living saint".
But this decision will ripple out to affect every part of the city. Amidst a slowly worsening food shortage, riots, and a communication blackout from the rest of the Radch Empire, a religious savant will entertain visions of his own sainthood, a socialite will discover hir comfortable life upended, and a young man sold into servitude will find unlikely escape.

by Ann Leckie on Bookshop.org US!
