I hate academic philosophy Halloween. What do you mean you are jphil’s median time to first decision for submitted manuscripts?

one reaction i have to some of the garment rending about LLMs (maybe) getting better than people at math is that computers have been better than people at chess for quite a while now, and chess seems to be doing pretty good actually

a friend asked me to help out with a mock interview tomorrow and i'm literally so excited to show up in costume

and another thing. i'm not scared. please don't print in the newspaper that i'm scared. and an adult.

some people are maladroit watchers of a movie, which makes it a failure as a movie, according to me, evidently also a maladroit watcher of a movie

Having seen you can see everything a second time, I think it’s a masterpiece that will stand the test of time. It’s just SUCH a rich text (and its preoccupations are the preoccupations of the kind of people who write and think about this stuff)

i think it's probably correct that AI investment will prove to be a bubble and a lot of people will lose their shirts. i think that's probably correct even stipulating that the technology is real and useful. but zitron's analysis is essentially useless and people should ignore it

Striking confirmation of that one draft I have but never published and haven’t looked at in over a year (anyway, cool work I’m qting to remind myself to read it more carefully)
Causal reasoning lies at the core of human intelligence but few studies have tested its neural basis. In a new study, we find that despite its importance, causal reasoning is implemented not in a single unified brain system, but rather in separate domain-specific regions.

you know i'm on that deep noam shit when i'm posting nozick's intro to philosophical explanations. this goes so hard though lol
yeah i definitely think there are exceptions! though i sometimes worry about the value of 'knockdown arguments' for reasons nozick dramatized

I think it’s correct that philosophy mostly doesn’t tell us anything useful about how to act in real life, but that’s not a demerit. Philosophy is addressed to intellectual problems, and most of the difficult problems of how to live are not intellectual problems at all. They’re problems for the will
I know, you're probably not making a point here but I thought of Sophie Grace Chappell's critique of dilemmata and thought experiments in contemporary philosophy. She argues that they present simplified and isolated situations so that they don't tell us anything useful about how to act in real life

Only name things that you will refer back to, and give everything you name an informative name. Reading papers is already hard, don’t gratuitously load working memory
calling one of your philosophical characters Smith and one of them Jones isn't that much more helpful for back reference than calling one of them X and the other Y

An important part of philosophical expertise is knowing when you can say ‘…or whatever’ and when you can’t and have to get it precisely right
