A heart drawn in the sand at a beach at sunset snippet of chapter 5: Chloe had been right before in that he wasn’t impressed with their last activity for the day, but not because it took place outside. “This is just sad,” he told her, as they settled on the picnic blanket. “Especially for a decent resort like this one. They couldn’t come up with something better?” They were on the beach, the blanket held down by weighted wicker baskets that were more for decoration than anything. Electric candles stood bunched together on two sides, with their dinner under cloches on two individual serving trays. And that was it. They hadn’t even gotten out there until the sun was already down. Most of the illumination came from string lights nearby; they weren’t all that close to the water. “What else is there even to do?” Chloe asked, glancing at him. She sat easily enough on the blanket, one hand braced behind her, face turned up a little into the breeze. Her hair was in a ponytail, loose strands gently getting blown about. Ever since the meditation class, she’d seemed genuinely relaxed like she’d hardly ever been since getting here, and now was no different. He wasn’t sure what had changed, but he sorely hoped it lasted. “It’s a beach picnic. We’re on the beach. There is a picnic. That’s all there is to it.” “Very wrong, Detective,” he said. “A romantic beach picnic is all about the ambience, and this one is sorely lacking.” “Like you have so much experience with that,” she teased. “Take people for romantic picnics all the time, do you?” He scoffed. “I don’t need experience to know it could be better.” “How, then?” she asked. Something in her countenance changed; she straightened, the teasing grin disappearing, and fidgeted with the tray nearest her. But she didn’t seem to be getting tense again either. “If you were in charge of setting it up, what would you do differently?” He hesitated then. There was something about the way she’d said that, like it was less a challenge and more a meaningful question. Why?

Lucifer confronting Cain snippet of chapter 50: They left Dan frowning after them and crossed the remaining distance to the lieutenant’s office. Lucifer opened the door and strode right in without waiting for any sort of invitation, Chloe following just behind. She shut the door. Cain just watched them, as stoic as ever. It was no wonder he was so stone-faced all the time; he favored rocks, and he’d had millennia to practice indifference. But Lucifer knew now that he was anything but. “Can I help you?” he said, eyes going from him to Chloe. Lucifer went to one of the chairs placed before the desk and gripped the back, making a show of looking around the office. He’d never been in here before with Cain as its occupant. It was just as dull as the rest of his facade; perfectly boring and organized bookshelves, the desk neat and respectable, every lightbulb and filing cabinet completely average and unremarkable. There wasn’t a single personalized touch in the entire room. Was that part of hiding in plain sight, too, or was the first murderer just completely lacking in any sort of interesting personality? “So this is what you’ve been doing with your endless existence lately,” Lucifer said. “Masquerading as a tough, weathered, by-the-books cop—and one who’s holed up in an office all day at that. Seems like the most boring option to me, to be perfectly honest. If you need tips on how to enjoy immortality, I’d be happy to help, Cain.” For another beat, his expression remained impassive, not a single flicker of surprise showing. And then he leaned back, something in the air shifting. He wasn’t going to deny it—a pity. Lucifer had almost been looking forward to that verbal sparring match. “So you finally figured it out,” Cain said. “Took you long enough.”

Hi, I’m an inferior myocardial infarction (heart attack) after the birth of my first child (3 weeks post partum) after becoming septic with the worst case of mastitis they’d ever seen. On Valentine’s Day no less. That was a fun introduction to motherhood.
