Meta and X have been quietly downranking external links for ages, but we're now entering a new era of open hostility toward the open web.

It's a great time to build your own website, free from any billionaires demanding a tithe for things that have always been free.
Fucking hell. Facebook is now limiting the number of links that a page or professional profile can include in a post to TWO PER MONTH, unless you pay them $7.99 a month.

Fucking assholes.

If you didn’t know that data centers depend on diesel generators—which are loud, toxic, prone to catastrophic accidents, allowed to run even when the grid is functioning, and were invented in 1897—well, now you do.

Data center spills 5K gallons of diesel into New Jersey Meadowlands
The spill affected a tributary of the Hackensack River. Authorities say cleanup is underway.

This cliche propaganda is a perfect example of how modern conservatism reimagines everything they don't like as a personal attack. The objective of bike lanes is to make drivers miserable? No, but that's how to fire up the base. Everything (immigrants, trans folks, vaccines, bike lanes) is an attack
Another example of what we describe in our book as Bikelash Mad Libs™, down to the rather predictable line, "Los Angeles is not Amsterdam, and the San Fernando Valley is not Copenhagen."

I say it's a non-issue insofar as there's no reason for any Democrat to go on Fox News and talk about how people's concerns are valid.

It's not a non-issue or a symbolic right; getting trans kids out of sports is not the end goal. It's the way to get Dems on board for more attacks on trans people.
"It's a non-issue so who cares if Dems are going on Fox News & throwing trans kids under the bus." Come on.

The right is not symbolic. It's also not a triviality; Republicans are scaffolding other forms of discrimination by getting Democrats to join the panic over 15 athletes nationwide.

this one is actually worse than the one everyone is dunking on. “we certainly weren’t perfect” is a wild thing to say about people being straight up murdered by some random racist who was encouraged by the bloodlust coming from both sides of the aisle.
The gut-wrenching appreciation for the firefighters and civilians who sacrificed their lives trying to save others. And above all, the feeling that we as Americans were on the same team.

We certainly weren't perfect. In those early months, Muslims and immigrants were targeted.

Journalism ---> graduate school observation of the day:

In journalism, having lots of ideas is not a problem, you blow through them fast. In academia, you have to choose. The payoff of getting to go deep is worth it, but I'm used to, like, dancing in an idea fountain and splashing everywhere.

My 2008 essay that started it all (nice to see here; over on FB the AI clickbait spammy recaps of the story, sometimes with terrible AI photos, always with inaccuracies, circulate).
The origin of "#mansplaining"....
