"The simplest reason to refuse resignation is that resignation can only harmonize with the tech-industry narrative of AI inevitability. When we give in, we join the sales force." From our Fall 2025 issue:
Large Language Muddle | The Editors
The AI upheaval is unique in its ability to metabolize any number of dread-inducing transformations. The university is becoming more corporate, more politically oppressive, and all but hostile to the humanities? Yes — and every student gets their own personal chatbot. The second coming of the Trump Administration has exposed the civic sclerosis of the US body politic? Time to turn the Social Security Administration over to Grok. Climate apocalypse now feels less like a distant terror than a fact of life? In three years, roughly a tenth of US energy demand will come from data centers alone.

I wrote about my undergraduate alma mater New College of Florida. Many thanks to everyone who spoke with me or fact checked me (you know who you are!). It was a crazy task to pack as much as I possibly could into about 3,500 words and keep it focused and hopefully interesting for a broad readership.

“The perspective is beautiful—and useless. It emanates from, and returns taciturnly to, somewhere beyond utility.”
The Freedom of the Weasel | Grace Glass
Her great themes were timeless, the stuff of the ancients’ ancients: perception, eternity, travel, the problem of evil. She repudiated Aristotle, denied the primordial split between myth and natural philosophy: Anything could, and would, be likened to everything, in the service of the sentence.

“The school’s freshly revamped general education curriculum boasts course titles such as ‘HUM 2380: How Can I Survive, Reproduce, and Flourish?’” Lauren O'Neill-Butler on the MAGA takeover of New College of Florida.
Death of the Mind in Sarasota | Lauren O'Neill-Butler
The story of New College of Florida “merits attention . . . if only to record the perseverance of those who, for more than three decades, struggled to overcome numerous and daunting difficulties to help keep the institution alive.” So wrote Furman C.

This Friday: celebrate New York's underloved and undernoticed civic buildings with us at the Center for Architecture. RSVP here:
The Municipal Sublime
In a city that treats its architectural highlights—and even some of its mediocrities!—with an ardor that verges on the obsessive, plenty of buildings nonetheless manage to escape collective reverence.

“We know that we’re in a bad stage and that the orange will continue to deepen — and still we’re reassured that we’re not yet at red, which would mean, presumably, ‘truly cooked.’”
Orange Era | Dushko Petrovich Córdova
As familiar as they are, these orange maps can only depict a rehearsal, a prelude. In the pre-vaccine moment the Covid maps were terrifying, but examining them, you could imagine a future after orange. One feels very different looking at the climate maps. There is no de-escalating from orange.

“The more I try to imagine the kind of person swayed by these advertisements, the more the group shrinks…The real money in Silicon Valley is made well before anyone thinks to put up one of these garish monstrosities.”
The Billboards of Silicon Valley | Adrian Daub
YOUR AI AGENT NEEDS A WORKFLOW ENGINE. The billboard stands by a nondescript stretch of highway somewhere between Redwood City and Mountain View. A boom, likely a bubble, made manifest. A cry of triumphant return. And probably one day, a monument to a bubble bursting.

“Still, hope is irrational. Tenacious. The thing you hold onto when all else fails; the thing that dies last.”
The Hi-Neighbor! Mayor | Dennis M. Hogan
When I first met David Morales it was December 2019, and I was standing in David’s ill-lit bachelor apartment as he announced to a small holiday party full of socialists that he intended to run for state representative. I was skeptical.

"From the moment Chuck Berry sang in rock’s first pop hit about how his Ford V8 couldn’t keep up with his cheating lover’s Cadillac Coupe de Ville, Cadillacs have enjoyed a privileged relation to music."
EV Listening | William Harris
The Honda Prologue has a hovering, suffusing melody, with a low rhythmic pulse and a subtle, epiphanic wash. It sounds like a computer game lifting you into heaven, or the arrival of benevolent extraterrestrial colonists. The Porsche Taycan makes a more sinister and comic, gulping, warp-speed sound, and the Nissan Ariya gives off a disturbed digital whine, like the tantrums of a petulant robot.

Michel and Mom | Leigh Claire La Berge
Mom’s still here. I can call her and talk to her, though not about French medical history. Not about anything, really — we mostly exchange affective states and appreciate the fact of each other’s being. Of the growing collection of losses I feel so acutely in the wake of Mom’s dementia, many are the obvious and expected. Her whole self. Her role as parent. Her daily phone calls to me. Other losses I am genuinely surprised by.

“It was a shame this part of the evening couldn’t last forever; it was a shame they had to go to the Parties at all.” From Issue 54 and now out from behind the paywall: an excerpt from Chad Harbach's new novel, THE BRIGHTNESS!
The Parties | Chad Harbach
There were speakers everywhere, pointed out upper-story windows, throbbing on porches, wedged in the crooks of trees, and the sum of so much blasted music composed a surprisingly gentle mélange above which burbled the happy shouts and shrieks of classmates greeting each other after a summer apart. So this, Irma thought, was the Parties.
