Over the next few weeks I'm posting excerpts from something I've been working on.

The history the National Park Service leaves off the plaque. 63 national parks, one at a time.

Tuesday evening at Blue Lake in the North Cascades.

The last sunlight lit up the rocky spires of the Liberty Bell Group, with golden larches surrounding the lake.

I was really glad I stayed long enough to see the mountains light up like this. 🍂🏔️

Arches was Ute and Southern Paiute land before settlers came. People lived in this red-rock country for about 10,000 years. Rock art along the Colorado River shows they hunted, gathered food and held ceremonies here. 🧵

The Southern Paiute called Zion Canyon Mukuntuweap, “straight canyon.” Paiute bands farmed corn and squash along the Virgin River, hunted deer and bighorn sheep, and gathered pine nuts and yucca. Ancestral Puebloan sites in the park date to about AD 500 to 1200. 🧵

4 a.m., Nov. 23, 1733. Men carrying firewood walk into a Danish fort on St. John. Hidden in the bundles: cane knives. By afternoon, about eighty people were armed. Denmark called in France.

Acadia sits on Pemetic, “the sloping mountain land.” Wabanaki people, including the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy and Mi'kmaq, lived on this island for at least 12,000 years. Shell piles along the coast show they fished and hunted seals here season after season.

A lot of what’s happening doesn’t seem to be spreading anymore by mainstream media. A tree that stood for an estimated 150–250 years was destroyed today to make way for Trump’s border wall.

Federal agents swarmed a protest encampment today, arresting a dozen people and allowing contractors to remove a live protester from, then cut down, an ancient, giant cottonwood "Grandmother Tree" to make way for border wall construction. Protesters had been at the site near Lochiel, AZ for 71 days.

The National Park of American Samoa sits on land the U.S. doesn't own. It's leased for 50 years from village chiefs (matai) and the territorial government, and the Park Service must consult village councils before changing land use.

Search ‘LGBTQ+’ on the National Park Service website. Now look at the words on the pages it sends you to. They don’t always match what you searched for.
