This is emblematic of something bigger happening in our politics right now: business organizations such as the Washington Roundtable and the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce are simultaneously eagerly campaigning for austerity while they also campaign for investments in their own priorities.
In this morning's budget meeting, Councilmember Bob Kettle fulminated angrily that the budget should fund an additional 150 police officers a year, without saying how. He also stated confidently that hiring bonuses work to increase lateral hiring, which is not what a study by the city found.

Disgraceful
Between 22,000 and 30,000 veterans lost their homes in the last 18 months. Our Republican colleagues wrongfully terminated VASP, and these veterans are paying the price. The men and women who served this country are suffering because of the actions taken by this majority.

A top-paid public-school teacher in Olympia making $180,000 per year would have to work for 278 years to earn $1 million in annual pension benefits – this is impossible.
Nobody — not teachers, not retirees, nobody — will be taxed under the Millionaires Tax unless they make more than a million dollars per year, and voters will always have the final say on any changes to that threshold. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you.

Free advice to my friends in Portland, from someone who helped stop school closures in Seattle:
Solidarity is the only way to win. If you try and pick and choose which schools to close, you lose.
And remember: the evidence is very clear that closing schools doesn’t save money.

Some are are organizing to stop any talk of closures in its tracks. Others are focusing their advocacy on which schools should close.
