Amanda Milan was an aspiring fashion designer from Chicago who was living in Manhattan when she was brutally murdered by three men in a transphobic hate crime on June 20, 2000, days before #NYCPride.

A fearless firebrand, radical artist David Wojnarowicz challenged the art world and lambasted the US for failing the #LGBTQ community.

Wojnarowicz lived and worked in Hujar’s former loft at 189 Second Avenue from 1988 until Hujar's death from AIDS in 1992.

#OTD 1994 the Lesbian Avengers held a demonstration at the Alice Austen House (2 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island).

They called it a "National Historic Lesbian Landmark" and distributed pamphlets advocating for acknowledgment of Austen's relationship w/ Gertrude Tate.

In 1960, Andy Warhol, then an unknown artist who was making his living as an illustrator for I. Miller Shoes, purchased the narrow rowhouse at 1342 Lexington Avenue.

He needed a house in order to store his artwork, which was not selling, and house his growing collections.

Guillermo Vasquez came to the US in 1972 to attend Pace and Columbia universities and became a leading advocate for Queens' Latino community. He was instrumental in pushing for #LGBTQ visibility in Queens and raising awareness—especially among Latinos—of the #AIDS epidemic.

Clit Club was the first party at Bar Room 432 (432 West 14th Street in Manhattan), held July 27, 1990. It became known as a sex-positive mixed party for cis and trans women who self-identified as lesbian, queer, and androgynous, and their friends.

In July, 1940, Jewish lesbian chanteuse Spivy (aka Madame Spivy Le Voe; née Bertha Levine) opened her eponymous Midtown Manhattan nightclub in the terraced penthouse of 139 East 57th Street. It remained in operation until 1951.

This bold statement was declared after the acquittal of Michael J. Maye, a former professional heavyweight boxer, who assaulted activist Morty Manford at a GAA zap.

The Student Homophile League was founded at Columbia University in 1966 and held many of its activities in Earl Hall. In 1970, the group became the more activist Gay People at Columbia, which sponsored a series of popular Friday-night dances in Earl Hall’s auditorium.

Award-winning children’s book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak died #OnThisDate 2012. He lived and worked in a duplex apartment in Greenwich Village from 1962-72, w/ his life partner, psychoanalyst Eugene Glynn.

Joe Cino rented 31 Cornelia Street to operate a coffeehouse w/ art displayed, and then allowed patrons to stage poetry readings and short avant-garde theatrical performances.

The coffeehouse also served as a significant meeting spot for gay men.
