Neither man nor woman, but a force of nature. Great Value Baba Yaga. (Avatar and banner both by Dakota Curry)
You know how people sometimes call Star Trek "competence porn?" Well imagine that, but for people who became important at work on accident. I can promise you characters who are Good At What They Do and also Constantly Suffering For It in Fun* and Interesting Ways.

*fun subjective, not guaranteed
Okay folks of the #WritersCommunity, I have an interesting indie marketing prompt challenge...

Give us your elevator pitch, for yourself! What is your author brand? How would you sell yourself?

Ayo has short-term plans that often need to be adapted on thr fly. Thus is the nature of superheroics.

Lunere usually has *a* plan going at any given time, but despite their reputation, they're no "wheels within wheels" mastermind, just very good at seeing their goals through.
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters

Does your character have a plan?

Are they the type to have a multistage plan worked out in advance? Do they prefer to wing it? Or are they purely reacting to circumstances?

Does their plan need to adjust over time?

RISE AND SHINE's plot just clicked together into a perfect machine tonight, so we're on the upswing as writing goes! Turns out I apparently needed to make it MORE complicated!

There were two epiphanies I needed. The first isn't spoilery, so I'll share it: there are now TWO corporate entities.

In HOMEBOUND, Clyde is a loving father, Jericho holds strong principles, and Magpie House is confused and scared in a world it doesn't really understand.

In UNTITLED PROJECT, Logos is as much a victim of the system he enforces as those he kills, while...

Antagonist day!

I think even the most evil villains have things people will connect to, either something big or small.

What's something you think people will find relatable about your antagonist?

In a moment-to-moment sense, this probably goes to Iffy, who is the definition of chaotic.

In a fight or other quick conflict where tactics apply more than strategy, the answer is Ayo, who is always coming up with creative ways to use their limited arsenal.

For Ayo, laughter is one of the most important reasons they keep up their rather intensive PT regimen. As their mentor, Arshia Marsh said to them very early on, "why are we doing this if not so you can laugh?"

A physical laugh is always genuine. you just might not share their sense of humor.

Does your character laugh often?

What does a laugh from them normally mean?

Is it usually bitter? Sarcastic? Genuine? Contagious?

Ayo: they have massive reserves of patience, almost all of which are used daily on themself, or rather their illness, which requires Ayo to maintain an incredibly measured, deliberate pace with almost everything they do.

Since all their patience is reserved for that, Ayo winds up seeming impulsive

I'm sorry I am late everyone! Got locked out of BlueSky all afternoon! 😭

As I impatiently waited to return, the questions became:

Is your character patient? How do they handle delays and waits?

Ayo has a very good understanding of their CAPABILITIES, but a terrible understanding of their IMPACT, which is to say that they keep trying to insulate others from their antics and that just creates worry instead of actually protecting them.
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters

How accurate is your character's perception of themselves?

Do they see themselves clearly, good and bad?

Or is their view of themself distorted in a particular way?

Do they know that?

Ayo is either tinkering in their workshop or finding a way to mess with a friend.

Jamil is bouncing between the soup kitchen and the practice field.

Cassandra is doing a little urban spelunking before a night at the club

Maggie House is definitely up there, though it does have a bit of an unfair leg up on account of being a building.

If we're not counting eldritch haunted houses, then there's Brinewood in HOMEBOUND (superman analog without the Clark Kent identity).

Ayo is definitely bisexual (though with the caveat that they're almost exclusively attracted to the Veiled, who don't always gender the same way humans do), and despite their best efforts to the contrary following the Dromak Incident, they're a bit of a hopeless romantic, too.

Ayo: it's not going to be fun, but it's almost certainly going to WORK.

Lunere: sit back, relax, and watch the show.

Iffy: Run. Preferably start running yesterday.

Hypothetical day today!

You and your character find yourselves in a bit of trouble (what type is up to you).

They turn to you, smile and say: "Don't worry, I've got an idea."

How comforted are you?

This is very simple for RISE AND SHINE and UNTITLED PROJECT, so we'll start there. They're both first-person narratives told by Iffy and Lunere respectively, with no (currently planned) breaks for external POVs.

HOMEBOUND is...a bit more complicated.
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters

Let's talk POV today!

How many of your characters would you say are POV characters?

Does your story switch between a few, or follow only one?

What determines if a character gets POV time?

Ayo almost always baffles, not least because there's a good chance the first impression often involves an unlikely rescue.

But they're also a visibly disabled, hijab-wearing, signing, brown person in basically St Louis with a habit of asking a LOT of questions. Average citizen comes away confused.
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters

What kind of first impression does your character make?

When they meet and interact with a stranger, how does that person come away thinking about them?

For Ayo, it's definitely in the past.

For Lunere, the future holds at least one tragedy they must face, greater than any they've yet encountered.

For Iffy, also the past.
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters

We've talked a lot about tragic backstories and happy endings here.

Which makes me curious, from their perspective, is your character's saddest moment in their past, or still to come?

Are they on an upswing?

For HOMEBOUND, it's a seven-way tie for every major character (they're having a rough go of it).

In UNTITLED PROJECT, it's Lunere again! Life has never been great to them, and now they've got a rogue supercop and a self-proclaimed nemesis harrying them at every turn!
Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters

We are flipping things from yesterday!

We've punched someone who deserves it, now who will the audience think most needs a hug? 🫂

Is it the same person? 😂

Are they really going through it? Or just very huggable?

Romance accounts for nearly a 3rd of all fiction.

It's a genre with an overwhelming 84% woman readership.

And it's built around the idea that woman deserve happy intimate relationships.

And this OFFENDS men on a visceral level.

I love writing punchable characters. Iffy's got one riding around in her head right now! Formerly the autopilot for an escape pod, unbound from his programming he's now...a misogynistic dickhead. He spends most of a chapter judging Chiko for not being a conventionally feminine/attractive woman.

Welcome to possibly an antagonist day? Let's see how it plays out!

Do you have any characters you think a reader might want to punch, given the opportunity?

Are they a villain, or is it about a specific moment?

I basically always include someone for jokes, and usually it's my perspective/main character. Ayo being overly serious in HOMEBOUND is the exception rather than the rule.

So the awards go to: Jamil, Lunere, and Iffy.

Ayo is calling Jamil, half on instinct, even though he's probably not even in the same time zone.

Lunere is banging on the first door they can find. If it's that urgent, it doesn't matter who helps them as long as someone does.

Oh look a question practically aimed right at me.

In HOMEBOUND, Ayo is known as the "Wizard of Cahokia" for good reason. They have a habit of appearing, seemingly out of nowhere, doing something that seems to the untrained eye quite a bit like magic, and then vanishing. Wizard shit.

Does your character have a reputation?

It's either Jamil or Marsh. Jamil is VISIBLY have the most fun, but one could argue that he's hamming it up as a defense mechanism. Marsh has a lot less angst to deal with than Jamil, so her baseline is probably a bit higher, but she's also offscreen for most of the book...
