According to written down lyrics the line in the second verse of "Fisherman's Blues" is "a night that's full of soul". I always heard "a knife cuts through a soul" and I think that's a better line.

If you took the $800 million National want to spend on 11km of road and shared it equally between all South Island Councils they'd each get $38 million to spend on roads which would have a wider net positive on roads than 11km of north Christchurch highway.

The term "AI" is part of this. As Cory Doctorow (quoting Riley of Trashfuture) puts it "LLMs are real, AI is fake". LLMs and other kinds of machine learning have a bunch of uses aside from making garbage slop and running chatbots that drive people crazy.
feels like there is a group of smart and well-intentioned people who long ago made up their minds that AI Is Bad, swore off using it, and now get all their info about AI from each other. not saying they're wrong that ai is bad! but i think they're gradually losing touch with what it is and does

You know, I'd even take the kids out of the equation - I care more that people who need help can get it than that people who don't might also benefit.
If feeding a hungry kid accidentally benefits an "undeserving" kid, I am prepared to live with this devastating outcome.
