Those eyes.

Up close red kites (milvus milvus) are astonishing birds.

Today, thanks to successful reintroduction programmes, thousands now soar over southern Britain, making them one of the UK's greatest conservation success stories.

Fluffy ping-pong balls with very long tails.

Long-tailed Tits, Aegithalos caudatus, are endlessly energetic.
Fun fact: Failed breeders often help relatives raise their chicks! Tiny feathered babysitters!

Some birds sing. Sedge Warblers perform.

Caught this little whirlwind belting out its chaotic song from the reeds and brambles. Sedge Warblers don’t really do neat melodies.

Some birds don’t need bright colours to steal the show.

A lovely Lesser Whitethroat, Curruca curruca, keeping low in the scrub and brambles. They’re much shyer and more secretive than Common Whitethroats.

The original angry bird! Look at that scowl!

Caught this Dunnock singing from the brambles in the evening light.

Fun fact: Dunnocks are sometimes nicknamed “hedge sparrows”, but they aren’t actually sparrows at all.

Spring in the wetlands means everyone’s suddenly an architect.

These Black-headed Gulls (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) were hard at work gathering reeds and grasses for their nests at Sandwich Bay.

Riverbank ghost.

A Water Vole (Arvicola amphibius) peeking out from the reeds. I was lucky enough to watch these beautiful little mammals swimming quietly through the channels around me, one of those moments where you completely lose track of time.
