Things Gavin Newsom has vetoed this week:
-A ban on secretly recording people with smart glasses
-A ban on ICE agents working for the state government
-A ban on websites selling your data
-A bill giving native tribes more say over water rights
-A bill protecting transgender healthcare providers

If you want to learn more about how pervasive and normalized college sexual assault is, I recommend the book Missoula by Jon Krakauer. It’s a tough read but essential.

if you aren't already supporting @mothership.blog, you should be. support women and queer people in video game criticism and journalism. we deserve to exist in these spaces but, at least in the case of mothership, we can only exist and pay our writers and introduce you to new writers if YOU help us.

For most of my career, I've been the safe teacher on campus. This is do in no small part to 1) being warm and welcoming 2) having a classroom pantry 3) being generous with supplies
It's almost like humans work better when you treat them as such

When I make my classroom inviting-- plants, quiet, maybe snacks, soft music and lighting-- and match that with my attitude, suddenly study hall gets a lot more productive. I think we underestimate the value of providing an academic place of peace for kids.

Successfully convinced the district's tech services dept to unblock mothership.blog for potential use in my media class!
According to them: "The site contains legitimate media journalism, criticism, and essays that may be useful in a media course"

It's been more than a decade since I was a grad student, but this is a really fascinating list of books. I could some of them making interesting excerpts for my high school students' study of rhetoric or even our Project-Based Learning work
If you are a graduate student in the humanities (construed as broadly as possible), what is the MOST EXCITING book published in the last five years to you?
Please repost if you’re not a graduate student!

Me, while showing my media class the Muppets (2011):
"Think about the parallels between this and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo, where they have to dance to raise money for the community center."

![“Bongo” Ballpoint pen, pencil, watercolor, acrylic paint, and a little colored pencil.
Our man is in trouble this time, reader. Art supplies are scattered around a painting of an abstract cityscape. On the canvas we see a man in a telephone booth making a frantic call to his cat, Bongo. In the foreground, an answering machine is taking his voicemail, [Leave a message at the beep] --- “Bongo, Daddy got stuck in the painting. Go get help, Bongo.” Bongo stands at the base of the easel looking at the phone. Her tail in the air and ears perked up. Whether she’ll be able to help is open to interpretation.
Artist’s note: One of my favorites from the Spooky Pants book. I was playing around with the idea of a painting coming to life (like that guy in Ghostbusters 2) and kind of fumbled my way into this version. I really draw a lot of corded phones. I won’t stop.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:hkxtqxfvk4xh2roqbkebmoiq/bafkreid675pobhckre5wbkxub5qfu3vaxbls7mpuhlcidhvbbrjw6iua2e)

Watched in reverse, this project is losing all its backers...
But from THIS rather more conventional perspective, it's ticking along and getting very close to full funding! 3 days to go, 101 backers already behind it, 85% there...

As a person that loves a personal narrative, I'm a total sucker for this every time. Especially if involves a food I love--or could grow to love.
thinking about this tweet again, and the fact that it's got such a hold on me that I genuinely think about it whenever I write a feature because I don't want to do "the hot dog thing"
