Love the watery effect that the block cutter has achieved here for these seaweed woodcuts

The end of an era - After almost a century we said goodbye this morning to our great companion of the airwaves Radio 4 198 LW. I shall miss her warmth and crackle. Here’s the final sign off at the end of #theshippingforecast before she fell silent… ❤️

I don’t think I have seen this before. This sheet seems to have been printed un-inked and then printed inked.

is this the most diacritically endowed placename in Europe?

One French exonym thing I particularly like is how we pronounce the final s on its capital city's name, but then put a final silent s on to the names of its two second cities.

The problem with the memory sciences is that there’s never been a word for a unit of memory. This linguistic imprecision allows the pseudoscience of nostalgia to thrive

Some of us never stopped
Silver lining on hardware prices is we're all getting closer to becoming scrappy wise-cracking engineers with a smudge of grease on one cheekbone, cobbling together gadgets from spare parts.

Look, that’s the sort of thing that really delights us: a well-thumbed manuscript that contains a wealth of information about a private library and book prices in the 18th c (ms. 1901). You’re always welcome to study this in our reading room (once the temperature has dropped a bit). (1/2)

Noticed on this 17th-century map the spelling "mershe" for 'marsh' – this is the older spelling, before the 'ER > AR' sound change that affected 'starboard', 'darling' and the pronunciation of 'sergeant' too.

The change obscures the etymology of 'marsh': as literally 'mere-ish', a lake-like thing.

Happy 283rd birthday, Anna Letitia Barbauld!
Here, from 1795, is her at once funny, domestic, and sublime poem "Inscription for an Ice-House," offered in honour of her day, and also as a reminder to my UK friends who are anticipating a heat wave.
Do consider putting ice in your drinks please!

Seems like this could equally confirm people’s choice: at least they themselves will be ‘safer’ in a big car
The labels did move awareness: 20% more respondents recognised SUV danger after seeing the labels. But purchase intentions barely changed. Of people planning to buy an SUV in future, only 3.6% said they'd change their mind - even among those who said that other people's safety mattered to them 5/10

An outstanding find, and a fascinating, forensic article on the room, the people and the event depicted here. I read it on my phone on the bus as it couldn’t wait till I got home - looking forward to rereading on a bigger screen where I can look closely at the many illustrations
Historische sensatie!

Here is me, pleading with museum shops. We do not want yet another bookmark and eraser with your logo for 11 euros.

We. Want. Replicas. Of. Your. Nerdy. Stuff.
I really want some knock offs of these medieval socks from Egypt (12th century CE?) at the GWU Textile Museum.

When we were asked to provide a map of Framley, we bloodymindedly put one on the endpapers, but the map at the front disagreed with the one at the back, with the towns all in different places. It also wrapped round, like the maze does in Pac Man.

Geoguessr and historical design friends: any ideas whether the below 1923 photos were taken in Geneva, Glasgow, or Athens? There's a book spine and a map, both barely legible (this is the highest res I have). Argh!
