You can blame the US for these deaths in that they would not have happened had the US not invaded Iraq, but you can’t *not* blame the direct perpetrators.

Al-Qaida and its allies killed 8,000+ Iraqis in 2005, 13,000+ in 2006, 13,000+ in 2007, 5,000+ in 2008, etc.

we had decades of the cultural zeigeist in larges parts of entertainment and academia being 'you can't trust THE MAN' and it did absolutely nothing whatsoever to make people more resistant to actual no-shit authoritarian and corrupt politics and leaders, and I wish more people would reflect on this.
I do think this is a really insidious result of all of the “government is useless and corrupt” propaganda that’s been pushed over the years - people don’t realize how much worse these assholes have made it

I would make the case that opposing USAID's existence on (purportedly) left-wing ideological grounds is a position that necessitates viewing the lives of people in developing nations as more of a number on a spreadsheet than the creation of USAID does.
So sure, USAID was a tool of US soft power and political influence, and also, I sometimes get the sense that people saying this don’t quite comprehend the torrent of death, horror, and pain that is currently unfolding from the genuinely evil decision to suddenly destroy it.
