you might be surprised how long it can take to realize a cat is eating your hair
one of the most frustrating and ubiquitous frameworks i see. maybe the biggest fight i had with my sister was over the bitterness she expressed toward a woman who sat in a car in front of us, parked for a while just as we had been, for having the audacity not to move out of the way for easier exit.
my cousins were convinced that manatees were mean because they would occasionally hit them with a jet ski and fall off and this is one of the governing metaphors of life to me

"wow, everyone knew this already" is such a cynical, annoying and unfortunately extremely common response to tech news. assuming your privacy is being violated and proving that it is are two very different things, and the latter is the result of hard work and rigorous reporting

this type of shit illustrates what these people think of other humans just as much as it does their assumptions about genAI capacity.

they really believe that the experience, interiority, and creativity embodied by an actual person can be flattened to a "perspective" that can be "represented"

Good writing in my view - while some commentary on here has framed Sheeran's justification as a demonstration of the hollowness of "neutrality", as a professional moral philosopher it is also what we in the business refer to as a "lie" and it may be helpful to refer to it as such
Ha ha ha Ed you cowardly hypocritical loser.

More than any higher ed development in recent memory, institutional subsidies for AI at R1 universities prove that austerity is a choice. It is not “too expensive” to invest in a humanities research infrastructure; rather, it is a choice that R1 universities make not to & subsidize AI instead.
The amount of money I saw one department paying for several AI services in a school year could cover the University’s pay one price textbook costs for nearly their entire enrolled student body in said department
Colleges could subsidize books for students rather than paying for premium versions of ChatGPT

AHAHHA!

For those of you that touch the tender flesh of another rather than computer: OAuth is a way to handle access to a resource WITHOUT providing a password. The idea is to let the user approve X to request their information from Y without sharing their Y login credentials.

Why is this funny?
HaJ3FgupAm8RrDJW3MHgT9X7Ft27eVaD

What is that? That's a hard-coded API token that Flock cameras use to identify themselves and get OAuth credentials, which can then be used to talk to Flock's production servers. Like, anyone on the internet can probably do this right now.

“In-game AI character Ms. Second is using AI generated voice. Using humans voices for AI character would be cultural appropriation.”

sorry does the media tab on here collapse threads, thus not actually showing you ALL of the media a person has posted? that... sucks!

esp since replies don't necessarily bump threads when you view them on people's profiles? am i wrong about all this lol

this is amazing, and aligns with a fantasy i have of a retrospective experience of console advancements and how they effect mechanics

idea brought to you by @dustmop.bsky.social taking me on my own tour (currently playing link to the past...i also pass the controller to him 😅) w/running commentary
Reminds me of when @andy.baio.net had his son play video games only in chronological order and the primary result was that the kid got *really* good at video games.

remember when a member of richard spencer’s entourage fired a gun into a crowd during his college speaking tour and they kept letting him speak on college campuses? it was about two months after a woman was murdered at an event he was headlining.

it's too bad, i would hope "Google Zero" would be more like "how to remove google from your life"
"Searches on Google for the term 'Google Zero' have increased by 190 percent. The term, coined by tech journalist Nilay Patel in 2024, imagines a time when Google acts solely as a direct answer machine instead of an index of the web."

that's the thing, really:

anti-trans sports panic is an absurd fantasy that persists, in part, because it's built on top of a different, near-equally-absurd fantasy
Followed up by "if your child was considered D1 material, you would have been told that by now".
When some parent tells you that they are concerned about their 8 year old at tee ball being able to get a college sports scholarship someday the one and only appropriate response is "What is wrong with you?"
