It’s sunset season in the northern Shenandoah Valley. I’ve missed this view #VAwx
Wide sunset view over a dark wooded valley and mountain ridges. A broad blue-gray sky is filled with layered and textured clouds, with pink, coral, and orange light concentrated along the horizon. A silhouetted tree frames the right side of the image. Vertical view of a mountain ridge silhouetted against a vivid sunset. Deep red, coral, and orange clouds line the horizon above the ridge, transitioning upward into pale pink, gray, and blue layers of wispy clouds. Wide landscape view of a wooded valley and mountain ridges at sunset. The foreground forest and valley are in deep shadow, while layered pink, coral, orange, and pale yellow clouds stretch across the sky behind the dark mountain silhouettes.

This explains part of the reason I’ve fallen head over heels for my TourBox
A heavier than you’d think magic box with Buttons and knobs and wheels and haptic feedback with clicking noises are a few of my favorite things when sorting photos now

Summer is trying to get one last round in this afternoon… Currently dumping rain and one blast of thunder in Oakton #VAwx
RadarScope Super-Res Reflectivity image from KLWX Sterling at 4:43 p.m. EDT on September 21, 2026, showing widespread rain and thunderstorms across Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C., region. Yellow, orange, and red reflectivity indicates heavier precipitation concentrated from Centreville and Fairfax through the Burke area, with additional heavy rain extending north toward Potomac and Montgomery County. Weather-station observations shown on the map are generally in the mid-60s to around 70°F.

Daughter got an updated prescription today for her astigmatism that included two hours/day of outside playtime. Was so happy she was in the room to hear that part.

Less than 24 hours after seeing this video from @samer.is I had my new TourBox configured and sorting pics. Can already tell it’s going to be a game changer for my photo sorting workflow

Today would have been my parent’s 56th wedding anniversary. Instead, later this week we will bury mom at Arlington National Cemetery.
Vintage color wedding photograph of a bride and groom walking arm-in-arm down a church aisle. The bride wears a long white gown and veil and carries a bouquet; the groom wears a black tuxedo with a bow tie and white boutonniere. Tall candles and greenery with white bows decorate the ends of the pews.

Photographing an adventure race this morning. First time I covered it, 26 years ago, I used my trusty Sony Mavica with 640x480 resolution. It took 1 photo/10 seconds and the 1.44MB “memory card” (floppy disk) held about 10 images. Things go a little faster now and my 512GB card holds a few more pics
Three Canon professional camera bodies with large zoom lenses rest on a weathered wooden picnic table beside an EX2 Adventures race course, with blue event fencing in the background. Sony Digital Mavica MVC-FD73 digital camera with a 10× optical zoom lens and a 3.5-inch floppy disk partially inserted into its side.

The sky tonight
Wide view of a textured evening cloud deck illuminated from below by orange and gold sunset light, with dark blue-gray clouds overhead and a small curled, plume-like cloud feature near the lower right. Closer vertical view of the sunset-lit cloud deck, showing rippled gray clouds, orange illumination, and a distinct narrow, curling cloud formation extending downward near the lower right. Wide sunset sky above silhouetted trees, with bands of rippled clouds glowing orange and gray. Several narrow streaks and wispy vertical cloud features extend through the cloud layer into blue sky above. Upward view of a blue evening sky filled with a broad field of small, rippled cloudlets interspersed with thin wispy clouds, creating a densely textured pattern across the sky.

Why is the house shaking at 1:45am?

Oh, it’s just AF1 on final approach…
Flightradar24 screenshot showing a U.S. Air Force Boeing VC-25B, callsign AF1, flying southeast over Fairfax, Virginia, near Oakton and Vienna. The aircraft departed Dallas/Fort Worth about two hours earlier and is shown at 5,650 feet and 293 knots, with its flight track crossing Northern Virginia toward the Washington area.

Earlier…
Morning fog drifts in low bands through a green, wooded valley, partially obscuring the trees and fields. Sunlight illuminates the foreground while distant peaks rise above the fog beneath a clear blue sky.

Tonight in the valley
A s’more is held in the foreground beside a brightly burning smokeless fire pit. Beyond it, the wooded valley and the mountains of the Fort Valley are silhouetted against a fading yellow-and-blue sunset, with a house and elevated deck at right. Flames rise from a fire pit at dusk beneath the elevated deck, illuminating the dark structure in orange-red light. Warm interior light glows through the house windows against a deepening blue evening sky. A marshmallow roasts over orange flames in a fire pit at night, held on a metal roasting stick with a circular turtle-shaped detail. The fire and glowing rim of the pit stand out against an otherwise black background. The Milky Way forms a faint, mottled band through a densely star-filled night sky above the dark silhouette of the Blue Ridge Mountains. A few distant lights dot the horizon and valley below.

Very heavy rain right now. Probably doing wonders for holiday traffic on 66 westbound #VAwx
A severe thunderstorm approaches over the Blue Ridge, with a turbulent, textured cloud base filling most of the sky. A dark, low cloud feature extends beneath the storm while a gray rain shaft obscures part of the mountains at right. Brighter sky remains near the western horizon. RadarScope reflectivity from KLWX at 3:09 p.m. EDT on September 4, 2026, showing a line of strong to severe thunderstorms stretching from near Winchester through Stephens City and Middletown toward Strasburg, approaching Warren County and Front Royal from the west. Numerous lightning strikes are plotted within the storms, with yellow warning polygons covering portions of the line.

Post-storm clouds tonight #VAwx
Dramatic mammatus clouds form a rippled, pouch-like ceiling across a blue-gray sky above the tops of a cornfield. Tight view of an extensive field of mammatus clouds, with dozens of rounded, hanging cloud pouches creating a deeply textured blue-gray sky. Close-up of rounded mammatus cloud formations in a blue-gray storm sky, crossed diagonally by several dark utility lines.

Found some fun books today! Would you believe that the Lake Ontario book is part of a series called “The American Lake Series”?
