The grail ceremony is horrid as usual in Evgeny Titov's new Royal Opera production of Wagner's quasi-religious mystery, but Stanislav de Barbeyrac's characterisation and singing of the title role are superb, and Jakub Hrůša seals his reputation as a great Wagnerian. theartsdesk.com/parsifal-roy...

"in a lovely touch, van den Heever returned for an encore, Zueignung, halting the performance midway to fess up that she was singing the wrong words (skipping straight to the 3rd verse after the 1st). After some Yannick–Elza joshing, the conductor offering her his score, their second attempt glowed"
“Sumptuous, hedonistic, highly calorific”: Yannick's back at the Proms, this time bringing his Met Orchestra and Elza van den Heever as a knockout Salome.

Subscriber offer: another opera already being sold at 50% off for next season. Why not stage fewer expensive operas and more Swan Lake and The Nutcracker instead? It would help keep our Étoiles and Premiers Danseurs from leaving the Paris Opera and give audiences exactly what they love.

José Cura and Roberto Alagna are both 63. Cura was wary of the star system, as it quickly turned him into a sex symbol while he wanted to be regarded as a musician. Alagna dreamed of becoming the world's leading tenor, while remaining deeply self-critical and often dissatisfied with himself.

The Palais Garnier will close from 2027 to 2032 after the discovery that all the lead in the stage tower must be removed before modernization can begin, extending the originally planned 2-year shutdown to five years. It had also been previously announced that Bastille would close from 2030 to 2032.

One of the great "what ifs" of the recording industry: André Previn had planned a studio recording of Korngold's Die tote Stadt for Deutsche Grammophon in the late 1990s/early 2000s, reportedly with Renée Fleming as Marietta. The project was quietly shelved.
