“If the Congress won’t act, and if somebody else won’t act, then veterans ourselves will stand up and say, ‘fine, we will act, we will fight for our country and for our people the way that we have always done,’” Lindsay Church of Minority Veterans of America, the petitioner in the suit, told me.
❗SCOOP: The first lawsuit over the Trump administration’s abortion ban for veterans & their dependents was just filed.

Minority Veterans of America says one of its members w/ chronic health issues + a history of pregnancy complications is currently being impacted.

By all that is holy, if and when SCOTUS decides that birthright citizenship is protected in the Constitution, don't let the 3-3-3 numpties tell you this is a moderate, centrist court. Rejecting an a-textual stupid Hail Mary doesn't cash out to a push when it comes to eviscerating the VRA today.

Death, taxes, and the Supreme Court desperately trying to undo the progress of reconstruction and the civil rights movement.
The Voting Rights Act is essentially dead and it’s quite possible that we will, like when a similar SCOTUS gutted civil rights at the fall of Reconstruction, see a disappearance of much of the Black congressional representation, especially in the most heavily Black states, which are in the South.

"I dissent because Congress elected otherwise. I dissent because the Court betrays its duty to faithfully implement the great statute Congress wrote. I dissent because the Court’s decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity. I dissent."
Second (and last) #SCOTUS ruling is the big one, Louisiana v. Callais.

For a 6-3 majority (Rs v. Ds), Justice Alito purports to narrow the ability of states to draw majority-minority districts as a remedy for race-based vote dilution, but, per Kagan's dissent, comes pretty close to gutting the VRA:

Table setting: More than 100 studies have found mifepristone is safe and effective. It's safer than continuing a pregnancy. The only way to claim it's unsafe is if you believe abortion is murder, which is what we're going to hear today.
Are Abortion Pills Safe? Here’s the Evidence. (Published 2023)
The Times reviewed 101 studies of medication abortion, spanning continents and decades. All concluded that the pills are a safe method for terminating a pregnancy.

The Supreme Court is as powerful as it is in large part because of a reputation that it earned through fitfully at best furthering racial justice. It has diminished that reputational capital for more than a century. We should in fact respect it less because of that.

Abortion access works in political-geographic systems: when there is regional regulation, you’ll end up with some sanctuaries, some islands, and some deserts of access — in the US, in Italy, and beyond. So glad my oldest paper with @paytongannon.bsky.social has finally made it online!
Sanctuaries, Islands, and Deserts: @paytongannon.bsky.social and @dmpullan.bsky.social propose a typology of regionalized abortion policy. Comparing the US and Italy, they analyze the impact of regional abortion access on abortion providers and patients.
