Yn a worlde where the humanityes are being systematicallye defunded by both the righte and the lefte, the internet ys one big seminar about the meaninge of *The Odyssey.* Ther ys a lesson yn thys somewher. And the lesson ys: funde the humanityes.

Their goal is to create so much chaos and so many crises that it starts to feel like nothing you do makes a difference. Don’t believe it. Every action matters. Keep showing up and remember the resistance will prevail!

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
The FIFA Prize for Literature Following the success of their Peace Prize, FIFA establishes a literary prize judged by the footballers at the world cup. (image of trophy) All does not go well... Players arrive at games exhausted by reading hundreds of novels and heatedly debating their merits long into the night. (image of tired players on pitch reading) The south American teams boycott the tournament when an official disparages Isabel Allende's use of magic realism. (Image of players angrily leaving) Seventeen plavers receive red cards after a discussion of radical honesty in the works of Karl Ove Knausgaard turns into a brawl. (Image of players fighting) However, all is forgiven as Joyce Carol Oates takes the thrilling final to extra time, before losing on penalties to Haruki Murukami. (image of Haruki holding the trophy aloft)

The stories & photos from today’s voting rights marches in Alabama deserve to be seen by people who weren’t able to stand there in person. If this piece moves you, please share it widely & help make sure these voices aren’t lost in the noise of a crowded news cycle. open.substack.com/pub/joycevan...

Pierre Bourdieu once argued that the question of whether something is art isn't answered by the artist's intention or even the object itself. Instead, the quality of being "art" is conferred by a community — curators, dealers, auction houses, audiences, etc. 🧵
Someone on Threads writes: "The Met Gala feels like real dystopian shit. People can’t afford groceries or gas. But we’re going to celebrate this event which is nothing more than wealth porn."

From James Baldwin’s The Fire Next Time
#booksky 💙📚
Life is tragic simply because the earth turns, and the sun inexorably rises and sets, and one day, for each of us, the sun will go down for the last, last time. Perhaps the whole root of our trouble, the human trouble, is that we will sacrifice all the beauty of our lives, will imprison ourselves in totems, taboos, crosses, blood sacrifices, steeples, mosques, races, armies, flags, nations, in order to deny the fact of death, which is the only fact we have. It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death—ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible to life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this passage as nobly as pos-sible, for the sake of those who are coming after us. 6
