St. Nicholas was the only house of worship destroyed on September 11. Its rebuilding reflects the spirit that carried New Yorkers through the days, months and years in the wake of the attack: a belief in each other, the hope of recovery, and a determination to begin again.

This afternoon, I joined Archbishop Elpidophoros and faith leaders at St. Nicholas National Shrine to mark the 25 years since the horrific terror attacks of 9/11 and reflect on the resilience of our city.

And it was actually reflected in polling- there was a broad *increase* in support for Muslim Americans after 9/11, because of signaling from leadership.

But that was indeed short-lived, as what began as outbursts of Islamophobia became policy and political ideology over the next decade.

really cannot be emphasized enough that the drafters of the birthright clause very much considered cases analogous to undocumented immigrants and *included them too*
That's right.

I think it’s helpful to realize that worldviews- political, ideological, religious, etc- are primarily used by people to imbue events in the world with meaning, rather than explain why they happen.

People can easily tolerate a lack of understanding, but no one can tolerate a lack of meaning.
This is really what I was getting at. Talking to people about politics is to realize that most of them have no clue about how political choices end up creating the realities around them. They just can't fill in the blanks between who they voted for and what happens next.
Some people will see high gas prices and make the connection with an unpopular war. But we are so burned out by how few people ever connect Trump's actions with their results. Still, we must don the mantle of hope.
