I first encountered homophobia (and sexism for that matter) at my Catholic elementary school. I also learned to embrace the importance of service and moral courage, not to mention a love of visual pageantry (the Incense! the outfits!).

Last year, the @sfchronicle.com visuals team followed San Jose State's turbulent volleyball season after Blaire Fleming became the target of the anti-trans movement. We waited to publish these images until she was ready to speak publicly.
