Carl Schmitt once said that modern concepts of the state are just "secularized theological concepts." The fact that the Constitution hasn't changed much over the years shows that it has reached a level of sacralization that's almost like the Bible.

The only review so far says it's bad, but a new translation of the Tractatus is always interesting. Let me see if it's really that bad. 😅

I wonder if dread, and not Being, is the primary question of philosophy.

Philosophy likes to see itself as on the hunt for eternal truths, from moral facts to the deep structure of reality. | https://bit.ly/4dwHUld

But Amie Thomasson argues metaphysics isn’t about describing reality, but redesigning and engineering language to enable us to do new, better things with it.

Sometimes life has a way of knocking you down whenever you're about to get back up. But philosophy somehow makes things better, not by offering solutions, but by allowing you to make some sense of an already problematic situation.

Such a poetic ending for a historic franchise. Perhaps the two greatest acts in the Ed Sullivan Theater—the Late Show and the Beatles—shutting off the lights for good.

Thank you, Stephen, for such a class ending after an egregious cancellation. Thank you for the hope you brought to all of us.

All the philosophy students who pursued their passion made a wise decision. Learning how to think is a always a good investment.

Psychology grads are not doing too badly on the job market either.

New article out!

Using Philippine traditional medicine and Wittgenstein's Remarks on Frazer's Golden Bough, I argue here that some rituals, understood as rituals, must be tolerated in medical practice.

I doubt that Pope Leo XIV will lose any sleep over this, before he begins his pilgrimage to Africa tomorrow. But the rest of us should. Because it is unhinged, uncharitable and unchristian. Is there no bottom to this moral squalor?

Always suspect of academics describing their publication in terms of where it is indexed. Makes me wonder why they even wrote it in the first place.

Lots of people think philosophy is an "armchair" discipline in which empirical evidence is largely irrelevant. But, humorously, this idea is contradicted by the empirical data. Looking at records from prestigous, generalist philosophy journals, I found something striking.

My undergrad history courses skipped the German Idealists altogether, mostly because our department was founded by Logical Positivists. Is this practice common among analytic philosophy departments?

Ok *now* it’s philosophy’s time to shine
I think we need an inverse thread where we talk about things that normal intelligent people universally agree upon that are for some reason hot takes within your profession
What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

Free will, writes Alexandre Fillon, is a fiction invented not innocently, but with purpose: to make us feel guilty, and to justify punishment.

If we ditch Harry Potter because of Rowling's transphobia, does this mean we should also ditch Being and Time because of Heidegger's Nazism?

It's a genuine question. I'm afraid I really don't have the answer to this one. 😅

Philosopher Mary Kate McGowan argues that that democracy’s crisis isn't that we cannot speak; it’s that we cannot hear each other, and often don’t try.

Natural systems, they contend, can never be fully captured by models, because they are fundamentally irregular and unpredictable.

We spend months writing papers we can't even access, we train students for arguments they will never use in real life, and then end up begging for the most basic benefits given to people who has a third of our hard-earned degrees.

Why are we in academia again?
