Working to support my gardening habit 🇳🇿
My mother has managed to pay the rent her whole life through her writing and acting. Never much, but enough. Amazing.

Today, the hospital Dr at our whānau meeting told us her cancer is incurable. Her reaction, “So it’s time to write my autobiography.”

I’m eating a very unusual hot pie for lunch. It seems to be a combination of mince and cheese and shrimp and chowder. The cafe was selling it at half price.

Somehow I got organised this weekend. Among other projects, lunches for the week on the go - from scratch lentil curry and a green curry with naan and rice respectively. Why look forward to 5pm weekdays when you can look forward to 12pms!

I made a sandwich to take to work today and the two slices my partner had left from the loaf were both crusts. Is this normal behaviour one would expect from a loved one?

Nice sandwich though.

You live in Pōneke. This morning, tucked in from the cold, you’ve been watching clips of people eating delicious meals. You’ve had coffee. You now feel compelled to venture through the frozen wastes and bring back an ingredient or two to make a special lunch for two. Budget $15-$20. What will it be?

Now and then, I get the urge to buy takeaway fish and chips in Pōneke. On action, I am disappointed. I respect I won’t get a tasty piece of fish any more, so no longer try. I do have a quest to find the perfect potato fritter. Thinly sliced with crunchy batter. And store made chips. That so hard?

Slow but steady progress with my stone terraces that shall one day be a garden. 2.5 of four walls done.

I underestimated the volume of rain on weekends this winter. I’m happy to work in the cold, but cold and torrential rain not so much.

So it will first be summer garden, not a Spring garden! 🌱🇳🇿

Tonight is the deadline for making online changes to the electorate you’re listed in for New Zealand’s 2026 general election. If you’ve moved since last election, haven’t updated what roll you’re on but think you may wish to vote, it’s easiest to sort things out today.

This time of year has the coldest nights but I enjoy the signs of Spring and Summer on their way. These grape canes are about to flower. This specimen was given to me for my new abode by someone growing a vine who got it from someone else who got it from me about ten years ago.🌱🇳🇿

There was once a day when the skies were blue and there was no rain.

Mum was distressed during my visit today. She says it’s the first time in 50 years she’s been blacklisted by the public library. Got told off for not returning books and now she’s afraid to go back. The dementia told her she acquired the volumes at a book fair. She’s always been a voracious reader.

Just got in a dog walk along the Skyline before the rain. In this place the wind gusts 87km/h and still you’re surrounded by clouds. The pylon cables sing, and under the pines, hundreds of groaning voices join in. Dog gives me a look. Yes, it feels like something wants our souls. Out and home. Phew!

Someone’s had their fun with real estate people’s names, Lambton Quay. But they got stumped on one.

Car broke down so I did the grocery shopping on my (non-electric) bike today. I like to shop in an area with two rival supermarkets very close to each other. That’s 14km away. I bought a bit more than expected (over 30kg). Then cycled up the 240m elevation home. I now appreciate the car a bit more.

I’m an honest, hard-working kiwi sympathetic to rural lifestyles, looking for a news site that tells it as it is. That’s why I’ve subscribed to the Whakataki Times. HTTPS://whakatakitimes.nz

This reminds me of school days many years ago. It was around this spot on the railway line that boys would put small hard objects like coins on the tracks so they could watch the train carriages jump. www.rnz.co.nz/news/emergen...

In my last neighbourhood, I used to be able to walk along the road and find garden herbs to use with dinner. Now, my cluster of 70s era houses is adjacent to these things. Never seen so many concrete, gravel and artificial grass berms. And no herbs. 😥 New garden can’t grow fast enough!

There should be a sliding scale for pricing chicken based on salmonella count. I don’t think this one’s cheap enough.

Where there is light, there is hope. To be fair, there are places (generally outside Te Whanganui a Tara) with more light.
