During one of the year’s lowest tides, our team explored Smith Cove, home to Elliott Bay’s only eelgrass bed. These vital underwater plants support fish, crab, and healthy marine ecosystems. Thanks to our enhancement project, eelgrass coverage has grown 20–25% since 2022.

Meet the hardworking people behind the commercial fishing industry. It’s much more than boats on the water. It’s the countless people who keep the industry moving from the waters of Alaska to the docks of Seattle and beyond.
The Fleet Behind the Fish
Behind every fish that makes its way from Alaska to dinner tables around the world is a fleet of hardworking people, specialized vessels, and an entire maritime ecosystem. At the Port of Seattle, commercial fishing is about much more than the boats on the water. It’s the captains, crews, engineers, processors, dockworkers, shipyards, suppliers, and countless others who keep the industry moving from the waters of Alaska to the docks of Seattle and beyond. Hear from leaders and fishermen who know this industry firsthand about what makes commercial fishing so challenging, rewarding, and sustainable. They share what it takes to work on the water, the many career paths available in the fishing industry, and why the people behind the fleet are what keep them coming back year after year. Featuring: Jim Johnson, President & CEO, Glacier Fish Company John Henderschedt, President & CEO, Phoenix Processor Limited Partnership (PPLP) Bob Hezel, Captain, America’s Finest From Alaska’s fisheries to Seattle’s working waterfront, discover the people and vessels behind the fish — and the jobs, communities, and families supported by this vital industry.
