River scientist who knows a bit about floods, floodplains, levees, and people. I may also suffer from an unhealthy obsession with Mississippi River.

Streamgages that have been collecting data since the 40s and 50s are being shut down in Illinois.

If we're having trouble finding funding to monitor pollution in our waterways, here's my suggestion:

The industry responsible for that pollution should pay for it.
My Turn | Illinois needs more water monitoring, not less
"Time is of the essence. The streamgages will be turned off Thursday, but we should have several more weeks before they will be removed entirely. Once the gauges are pulled

Cuts to the Army Corps levee inspection budget in New Orleans, a place that famously doesn't have to worry about levees.

Also struck by slower reduction in inspection quality, and its parallels to descriptions of PG&E line inspections in California Burning. Maintenance is a thankless task.

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.
