terror capitalism corporate complicity in Islamophobia and anti Muslim bigotry From U.S. Imperialism Comes Home to Roost: A Conversation with Ramah Kudaimi, Inform your Resistance, Season 3, Epsiode 4 Ramah Kudaimi: I think what folks need to understand is that there are entire industries that are set up to do this. To profit from Islamophobia and/or are complicit in affirming violence and bigotry against Muslim communities, both here in the U.S. and across the globe. Weapons manufacturers, for example, like Lockheed Martin and Boeing, and big tech companies like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, all profit from wars against Muslim communities. And then we have oil companies and private mercenaries who come in to also benefit from this warfare and militarism. We have right-wing media corporations and social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook, who help them spread the disinformation and propaganda about Muslims to help rationalize and justify that violence. We have Wall Street firms like Fidelity that allow grant money via their donor-advised funds to go to anti-Muslim groups that then advocate for policies to further criminalize and dehumanize Muslims. Again, all in the service of justifying violence against them. There's an entire Islamophobia network, worth tens of millions of dollars, made up of pundits, academics, and think tanks, who also contribute to this Islamophobia. And it is an entire setup that is frankly directly related to a terrorism industry to create profit from engaging in anti-Muslim bigotry and violence. And I think this interplay of imperialism and capitalism. Comes into play through the business model of these corporations. A lot of times, corporations, their business model is profits over people. And specifically with Muslims, some have like labeled what's been happening these last few decades as terror capitalism. The idea that corporations are being able to profit off of defining entire communities as quote unquote terrorists, and then using these communities as test subjects for technologies developed in service of counterterrorism, which then gets deployed eventually for other purposes as well. And so, again, in these 20-plus years since 9/11, it's been Muslim communities or folks who have been racialized as Muslims across the globe, who have been dehumanized as terrorists and have become the test subjects for this wide range of technologies.

Tech Capitalism and the Neoreactionary Movement Behind DOGE by Matthew N. Lyons Neoreaction’s RAGEful Vision Neoreaction (abbreviated as NRx and also called Dark Enlightenment) is a political ideology that “rejects egalitarianism in principle, argues that differences in human intelligence and ability are mainly genetic, and believes that cultural and political elites wrongfully limit the range of acceptable discourse.” Neoreactionaries advocate authoritarian systems of rule based on monarchy or corporations, and they glorify both pre-French Revolution social hierarchy and futuristic visions of radically transforming human beings through technology. Computer scientist Curtis Yarvin first voiced neoreactionary ideology in 2007, and it spread largely though the tech startup subculture, assisted by Silicon Valley venture capitalists including Marc Andreessen, Balaji Srinivasan, and Peter Thiel. Many of Yarvin’s pronouncements closely foreshadowed what the Trump regime, and DOGE specifically, have been doing. In 2012, Yarvin proposed a “reboot” of government that centered on appointing a “national CEO, [or] what’s called a dictator,” who would oversee an operation to “Retire All Government Employees” (RAGE) and replace civil servants with political loyalists. In 2022, Yarvin envisioned a “butterfly revolution” under a second Trump administration that would give “absolute sovereignty to a single organization” treating the federal government as a conquered enemy. Despite its impact on the current Trump regime, neoreactionary politics is not MAGA politics. The movement to Make America Great Again, Trump’s political base, is a classic example of right-wing populism, i.e., a movement that combines calls to intensify oppression with twisted forms of anti-elitism. Neoreactionaries, by contrast, believe firmly that elites should rule and “the people” should not. Neoreactionaries dismiss the whole idea of a popular uprising. As Yarvin wrote in June 2024, “Charlottesville [the 2017 Unite the Right rally] and January 6 were the last lame breaths of what John Adams called ‘mobocracy’ in America.” What Yarvin envisioned wasn’t a popular uprising, but rather a top-down plan to “hack” the system in order to break it.

An article By Annie Wilkinson Why Authoritarianism Needs Gender Stereotypes and Democracy Needs Gender Justice Authoritarians have learned from each other that, whatever their personal ideological commitments, they can strategically instrumentalize others’ fidelity to a traditionalist politics of gender and sexuality. These transactional authoritarians stoke and ride the wave of moral panic to greater power. Vladimir Putin, for example, initially relied on gender equality rhetoric in the early stages of his authoritarian power grab before finding greater traction as a global innovator of anti-gender campaigns. In 2013, he banned so-called LGBT “propaganda”—a tactic adapted by Ron DeSantis in Florida a decade later—before more recently criminalizing LGBT activists as “terrorists” and banning “child-free propaganda,” a policy intended to compel Russian women to have more children. Authoritarian populist leaders and movements have adapted anti-gender campaigns as a modular tool in diverse contexts around the world. What anti-gender politics offers them is a unifying framework or “symbolic glue” that coheres political coalitions across issues, sectors, and geopolitical blocs, redirecting status anxieties conditioned by neoliberal globalization onto scapegoats crafted as existential threats. Most anti-gender movement actors have cast so-called “gender ideology” as their primary villain, while some deploy variations like “wokeism” in DeSantis’ Florida.

Reaching For Our Power Q&A with Yotam Marom, Author of For Louder Days PRA: You were very involved in initiating Occupy. What were the main takeaways for you from the encampment? Yotam Marom: The key lesson for me was that to succeed, movements need to want to be powerful. I know that sounds like common sense but, in practice, people in movements—and progressives broadly—are typically uneasy with having power. Of course, many people come to movements because they were victimized by someone, or some system, that had power over them, and they do not want to repeat that. But we also tend to stay on the margins because we never thought we’d be anywhere else. Yotam Marom (continued): When activists spend a lot of time losing, they pick up habits from that, and they get used to it. That was true about the movement I came up in, and it was also true about me and many of the elders who influenced me. They were part of a lineage of resistance and saw themselves as having the right politics and ideas, but they still felt they’d failed. These 60s activists thought they’d change the system, but they ended up living in a world that was far from the one they’d dreamed of creating. That experience, that disappointment, leads many of us to get comfortable existing on the margins. And then we start to choose being right over being effective. We set up barriers that make it hard for people to join the movement and develop an internal culture that can be punishing of mistakes or deviations. Yotam Marom (continued): If we are serious about long-term social change, we must confront these tendencies and turn outward, embrace power, welcome people in, and accept that leadership is important. We have to end what I call the politics of powerlessness.
