So much of the "quit wasting time and money on humanities programs" comes from dudes with humanities degrees from the Ivies. They get to have a broad, liberal, meaningful education, but it's narrow, lifeless career prep for the rest of y'all.

I suspect that what I wrote about sewing yesterday also works as a metaphor for writing.

So often when writers get stuck it is because you are impatient and trying to skip steps or avoid revision.

I have been sewing clothing off and on for 55 years. And the biggest shift/improvement is patience.

Taking the time to baste. Going slowly on tricky parts. Not doing tricky things when tired.

Checking fit before doing difficult to rip out stuff.

“If the work is essential enough for an organisation to rely on, then it is essential enough to be included in contracts, workload models, promotion systems and remuneration.”
Are you doing essential 'wife work' at your job without getting promoted?
In The Irish Times, Dr Sabrina Fitzsimons of DCU Institute of Education, highlights how women perform invisible labour, like mentoring and supporting colleagues, that goes unrewarded.

Next they'll be wanting to lob the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch 🙄
Declaration of interest statement anyone? Studiosisty surely has an interest to declare here?

And why is no one in this space talking to actual academic staff who actually teach students and set the criteria for the work that they assess for the award of degrees?

Must do much better.

It DOES.

Higher ed leaders are doing "decline of public trust" discourse in order to avoid talking about all the things they've done to undermine their institutions, including exploiting contingent faculty labor, attacking student protest, and underfunding the humanities
It’s weird to see so many higher education leaders beat their chests about “the decline of trust” from the public while refusing to acknowledge the conservative movement organizing to destroy it. Imagine someone stabbing you repeatedly while you complain about not having enough blood to bleed out.

It takes arts and culture to foster a sense of community and belonging, so we don't become completely objectified as extractive labour working to benefit others.
Doug Ford has a series of commercials out right now encouraging people to go into the trades, and in one of them the man states that he originally wanted to become a music teacher but instead went into a job that impacts and helps his community and ohhh BOY do I have fucking feelings about this

1) The Blair gov't failed students by encouraging more people to go to Uni
2) There are too many 'low value courses'
3) Apprenticeships are a panacea
4) Employers can't help because the government are over-taxing them
