df -h says you have disk space, but writes fail anyway? check df -i. running out of inodes from millions of tiny log files or stale session caches breaks things just as hard as a full drive.

how do you split backup responsibility between local homelab gear and remote VPSes? what do you keep only on-site vs only off-site, which tools glue the two worlds, and how often do you run restore tests?

need a throwaway shell in an image? docker run --rm -it --entrypoint sh imagename:tag (or /bin/bash) drops you into the image filesystem without leaving a container behind. fast for checking files, env and quick debugging.

backups are just receipts until you restore one. automate regular restores, test metadata and permission fixes, and time the process so you can actually recover during an outage.

Host box1
HostName 1.2.3.4
User root
Port 2222

your monitoring is only as good as its own uptime. if the alert system shares infrastructure with what it's watching, you'll find out it was down at the same time as everything else. keep them genuinely separate.
