Last week we debated the genealogies and geographies of Vodún, Vodou, Voodoo, and Hoodoo, the life and legend of Marie Laveau, and impacts of the Haitian Revolution. In Week 6, we'll discuss the Civil War and Reconstruction in Louisiana, ragtime as a genre, and Black and white Storyville. 🗃️ #EduSky
This week we debated the Spanish colonial period, Code O'Reilly and the subsequent growth of New Orleans's community of Free People of Color, the colony's transfer to the U.S., the 1811 German Coast Uprising, and histories and memorial cultures of/regarding Creoles of Color, including "Toucoutou." 🗃️
In Week 3, we discussed the Code Noir, racialization in connection to spatialization/architecture in French colonial New Orleans, and students learned about Juan Maló and the Terre Gaillarde Maroons. This week, we'll discuss New Orleans's Spanish colonial period and focus on Free People of Color. 🗃️
