I'm kinda fully over that "the British conquered the world for spices and don't use any of them" joke because for one, you cannot recycle material for 5 straight generations and get a laugh worth a damn but also because in order to make it you have to agree with Tommy Robinson about who is British

It is surely your incumbent duty to write a script to ask this a bunch of randomly-generated questions and cost them $1,000,000,000 in AI credits
Trump’s new AI website is kinda fun, it turns out.

How’s that for “effective altruism”?
So, Banksy bought a used yacht, repaired it and retrofitted it to serve as a rescue boat to save migrants in the central Mediterranean. The whole project cost the artist $860,000. Since 2020, the boat has saved more than 3,800 people.

- at least you built a load of infrastructure when borrowing costs were so low grandad? Right? Right?

It would be so cool if the liberal state would, like, just once use an ounce of the violence they police the left with to police the right

The reason not to triangulate against trans people isn't that it's bad politics (although I believe it is) or unnecessary (although I believe it is).

It's because YOU MUST NOT ABANDON THE VULNERABLE TO DEPRAVED PEOPLE WHO WILL DO THEM HARM. If we will, what's the point of anything else we do?

the worst part about this is that a lot of the damage will be permanent

by the time we can turn the research funding back on a lot of folks will have unsurprisingly and not unreasonably decided that they should leave this area of research because it will never be reliable

what a huge waste
NSF has reduced the research budget for all atmospheric, ocean, and earth sciences by ~80%.

80%!

A lot of us will not be conducting new research or training new students for the foreseeable future.

Website when James Talarico grits his teeth for an uncomfortable white lie: GENOCIDAL MONSTER WE KNEW ALL ALONG BASICALLY A GOP NAZI TRUMP FASCIST

Website when Tucker Carlson tries to sink a Muslim’s campaign by Shanghaiing him into alliance against The Eternal Jew: omg friend??? ally??? hero?????
It’s been something like four years now of Tucker saying shit directly out of Mein Kampf because Trump still isn’t enough of an old-style Nazi for him, and progs keep going “waow popular front he could be such a good working people’s ally in the coalition against the genocidal Zionists”

Millions dying because USAID was wiped out isn't enough. Secret police in masks kidnapping people to take them to concentration camps & deporting them while stealing all their earthly goods isn't enough. People dying in those camps from disease & malnutrition isn't enough.
It will never be enough.

Not to be pedantic but Christopher Harborne has already given £25 million to Reform and Ben Delo £8 million.

So the figure isn’t £72 million - it’s £105 million.

Correction: £76 million.

Criminal crypto billionaires giving £40m to Reform, I’m sure this is fine and healthy for our democracy. I’m certain at least that Labour will treat it as such.

No one will be "taught a lesson" if Talarico loses, any more than anyone was "taught a lesson" by Harris losing. In each case, the evil side wins a significant victory - transphobes get the senator they want, and Israel got the foreign and military policies they wanted.
The position “I’d rather a candidate be be rhetorically pure and lose than dissemble and win” is an aesthetic commitment, not a political or moral one
You can feel your feelings but the expectation that someone running statewide in Texas should speak the exact same way as in incumbent Senator in Massachusetts betrays a fundamental lack of seriousness toward the political project of advancing minority rights

I might've stayed in academia if there were this much money floating around! Instead, there are literally *no fellowships* offered by the EPSRC - the main funding body for UK physics - in the physical sciences.
NSF CAREER awards max out at $500k for five years so thatt pays for the research of forty-four promising mathematicians (incl training grad students ie more mathematicians) and also overhead to support their institutions).

In a week.

at this point: carbon removal is, at best, essentially a research project. renewable expansion is a policy project
At the moment we have no real idea how to scale up carbon removal--it's a hair on the mole of the ugly backside of the global hydrocarbon industry

But we do know how to scale up solar panels and wind turbines and batteries. So that's our job

The reaction to this really mundane article (which is basically saying, don’t stress out about drinking enough water to the point you’re chugging huge bottles) is insane.

No, this isn’t a plot to take your drinking water away and give it to data centres.
You don’t need to make drinking water a part-time job since too much of it doesn’t have any real health benefit.
