Hot take: You should build social apps so people can be social, not so you can eventually trap people in a room they no longer want to be in
Maybe the real moats are the drawbridges we'll build along the way?

In my latest augment piece, I re-think "moats" for the open social web by seeing what @standard.site, @blackskyweb.xyz's Acorn, and bridges like @ap.brid.gy + @wafrn.net have done for the ecosystem.

In a world obsessed with moats, the open social web drops drawbridges

what if you could see trends *only among your follows*, and you could prioritize influence?

excited abt what i think is the killer feature of catsup: your feed's trends, influenced by your faves, then regulars, then the rest of your follows.

no randoms, just your people.

A thread on Gander @gandersocial.ca interop plans.
Time to talk interop!

We've designed Gander with it in mind from the get-go. Every feature conversation includes:

“how will this work with the ATmosphere?”

With our PDS, relay, appview, moderation, and oh so many other things in place, we’re ready to connect the dots.

My PR to the PDS to move from IP rate limit for blob uploads to the user's DID just merged 🥳.

This means backend services are no longer limited to 1k blob uploads per PDS, and is limited to 1k per user. This will allow PDS MOOver to do a upload queue for larger accounts in the future.
feat: change the uploadBlob endpoint to use DID by fatfingers23 · Pull Request #4748 · bluesky-social/atproto
Since the uploadBlob endpoint is an authenticated endpoint we have access to the user's did and can use that as a key along with the ip for rate limits. This would help with backends that do la...

I have many thoughts, I'll soon have some cohesive writing on the topic! In the meantime some ramblings:

- the web came out of a military/academic environment as a system to distribute *information*
- the origin naturally emerged as *the* authority and thus security boundary (e.g. running JS)

All of this is true and yet I would still strongly encourage people to try to build PWAs whenever they can.

Apple’s App Store dominance is cracking in Europe and with as much as we have seen rea help people to build custom mods, the vendor lock-in era is over.

building native apps that aren't compatible across devices is literally the most exclusive option.

every device has a browser, the duopoly has just built systems that make pwas less appealing bc it's more lucrative for them.
Why wouldn’t I want to have an app that no one realises they can install, doesn’t appear in the App Store, or in their App Library?

Exclusivity is cool 😎

We just launched another Human Check option: a $2 Interac e-Transfer. The full $2 CAD goes to Food Banks Canada.

Gander never sees, much less stores, your banking details.

Our very smart advisor Blaine Cook had the idea. Making it work took some doing.

A serious Linux kernel vulnerability announced yesterday may impact PDS self-hosters.

CVE-2026-98432 involves mptcp connections, which the Caddy HTTP proxy enables by default.

An updated container disabling this has been publishes and will auto-deploy to PDS instances in coming hours.

Right now, Bridgy Fed only bridges public data, but we've recently had discussions with many folks who would like to bridge private/permissioned data.

So, with that, we've put some thinking behind it, and wanted to share our thoughts on it. We'd love to hear your thoughts, too!
The risks of bridging private data
One of the most common questions we get is, "Could you bridge my DMs?" And not just DMs, but also group chats, followers-only posts, subscriptions, groups and communities, etc. It's a fair question! ...
