Hello, Bluesky! I'm Rain, a California-based photographer specializing in capturing 'invisible' UV and infrared light.

I love connecting with smart, creative people in any and every domain.

Sunrise season opener, from my balcony this morning.

Happy Monday, pitter patter and all the rest!

A pale yellow Rhododendron bud shows off its sparkly sequins under UV, like a disco rocketship.

Kind of excited for the supposed AI extinction event. I will enjoy spending more time doing creative and functional projects, unreachable except by landline or post.

Giant Squill – beautiful bloom, or mild derogonym*?

Less ambiguously known as 𝑺𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒍𝒂 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒖𝒗𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒂, this one sat in the edit queue for a long time, but has finally come to life. Already can't wait for another go around with these neato flowers next spring.

*As in, 'Stop whining, you giant squill!'

Old blue truck out at the mines, and a friendly tip that you can turn off Adobe Photoshop's new 'ai assist' toolbar nonsense in Settings > Interface.

Take it easy, it's only Wednesday.

Into the mist.

This point juts out 500' / 150m above the Pacific; probably better if you can't see all the way down!

Never done this before, but I'm delighted to celebrate 4,500 connections here on bluesky. Thanks for bringing beauty into the world, friends!

A cluster of Milkweed seeds in their green state. I almost can't see it as anything but a sea creature.

Explored the local gardens with my #macro lens and 550 nm #infrared filter this past weekend.

The 550 nm filter allows both infrared and visible light through, so there is a little more color in it than pure infrared (which is colorless). It's not a widely used filter but I love it.

Valley Oak and lace lichen show off their spring greens in the East Bay hills.

A rare 'normal light' photo from me - to an IR photographer, taking visible light photos can be a challenge because it feels somehow horribly boring in the moment. This tree easily persuaded me out of that for a moment.

Sometimes a photo is only as clear as your state of mind while you were taking it.

This Echinocereus expels tiny galaxies into the night air.

Naughty flower left a tiny, invisible spine in my finger. I finally got it out after a month of minor agony. I did get a photo op out of it, though!

Butterfly Ranunculus doing its shimmery thing under UV light.

Do we not all need a spiritual and psychic reset this weekend? World events are too much to sustain. Planning to spend some time outside, not doing too much.

My friend's garden across the lake is graced with a Cobaea scandens (cup-and-saucer vine). They're so cool in person - no photo can do justice. They are generally white-to-purple but UV light reveals blue, red and pink in there as well.

So many photographers are or have been software devs.

All y'all should check out this cool light meter beta app and let @danhawk.bsky.social know what you think.
Well, here's what I've been up to-

I've been running a small private Beta on a new Light meter app for iOS and would love to get more feedback.
It's called Metered.
I should start with the reasons I created it and show you some screenshots.

beta link is at the end of the thread.

White Amaryllis, photographed under UV.

Many flowers do not react at all to UV, or if they do, they don't look very appealing. It's very hard to predict. Every once in a while, I luck out and get a 'like whoa!'

This'll do, lil friend

Yes, I am full of mediocre puns. How else can I distract myself from the wind and cold of a Bay Area summer day?

#SanFrancisco exists under a thousand feet of fog (actual). Sutro Tower breaks through at the horizon.

The Bay Bridge passes through Yerba Buena island, with Treasure Island off to the right.

View from the Berkeley Hills. #Infrared cuts cleanly through haze.

Magnolias in the blue sky, 550nm false color #infrared #naturephotography

One of the largest prints I've done, around 90 x 60" (230 x 152). I wish everyone had that kind of wall space because images at scale are great fun.
