Can NLP tools categorise word types across languages?

In paper led by @lottiegasp.bsky.social, 105 linguists tagged parts of speech across 52 language varieties.

Results varied significantly, showing why multilingual methods matter in clinical language analysis.

Can NLP tools categorise different word types across languages? A noun. A verb. An adjective. We tested NLP tools across 52 languages. 105 linguists from 42 countries annotated a translated language passage for its word types. We tested how well NLP tools could categorise word types compared to the linguists’ decisions. Key findings: - NLP tools for 25 languages had strong performance. Next, longer samples need to be tested. - The remaining languages had unclear or weak NLP tools. We recommend ways to improve performance. - We've openly shared our methodology, data, and code so the research community can undertake these next steps. Key findings: - Speech can serve as a marker of acute pain. - Speech was pain sensitive. - Under acute pain: Syllabic rate & speech-to-pause ratio increased during monologue task. 21st June is Global MND Awareness Day. MND robs people of their voice. We're working to track every change. 1 in 300 people will develop MND in their lifetime. No cure and few effective treatments exist today. Our focus. Speech is one of the first things MND takes. Objective, early measurement of changes is key. We measure speech biomarkers that detect subtle changes, before they become visible on standard assessments. We partner pharma and international consortia to strengthen evidence for tracking treatment response in ALS/MND. Our ALS/MND Work: putting science behind the standard of care. - Published scoping review on speech treatment for dysarthria in ALS. - Validating speech as a trial endpoint with global pharma & opnion leaders. - Advancing protocols for decentralised trials, no clinic visit is required. Every voice matters. Our MND community deserves better tools and faster answers.

Publication highlights: Phase 2a/b randomised placebo-controlled dose-escalation trial of triheptanoin for ataxia-telangiectasia: treating mitochondrial dysfunction with anaplerosis. Key findings include: 1. Improved mitochondrial function was observed in patients with A-T treated with triheptanoin 2. Statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvements reported during the trial 3. Neurofilament light chain and interferon gene signature identified as promising biomarkers for monitoring disease progression and treatment response 4. Findings build on in vitro evidence showing that mitochondrial dysfunction in A-T cells is reversible and preventable with triheptanoin 5. New publication by Redenlab: rapid repetitive syllable sounds associate with episodic memory, executive function, and working memory in cognitively healthy and subjectively impaired older adults. Key findings include: 10-second “pa,” “ta,” “ka” speech test predicts cognitive function in older adults. “Pa” test best linked to memory, executive function, and working memory. Speech features add predictive power beyond age, education and mood. Stronger executive function links in healthy adults; episodic memory links in those with cognitive concerns. Speech-to-pause ratio and syllable timing were key markers. The study supports remote, non-invasive early screening for Alzheimer’s risk. To read full paper, check out link in post.
