REC is a group of NY residents and other citizens formed to address serious environmental health and quality of life problems associated with Waste Connection's Dunn C&D Landfill.

The Dunn C&D Landfill, owned by Texas-based Waste Connections, is the largest of its kind in NYS. This gigantic 99-acre industrial operation is located near residential neighborhoods in both Rensselaer and East Greenbush, and is immediately adjacent to the Rensselaer City School District Campus.
NYDOH has research that shows burning landfill gas can release PFAS into the air. They have been asked by REC and Rensselaer County to find out if this is happening at the Dunn Landfill. In one case they said it is a permit issue.
THIS A HEALTH ISSUE! A LAWSUIT DOES NOT STOP DOH FROM TAKING ACTION.

Today’s Times Union. Step up Governor Hochul! Your bureaucracy doesn’t want to upset the status quo and fails in its role to make certain people are safe because $ talks and get your priority ahead of the people. Prove us wrong!

Per Advance Albany County Alliance CEO Kevin O’Connor: 4,500 tons of asbestos-contaminated debris removed from Albany's 11-story eyesore has been taken to Waste Management’s landfill in Gansevoort. The rest of the material will be taken across the Hudson River to the Dunn landfill in Rensselaer.

Demolition of Albany’s Central Warehouse is underway. Razed chunks of the dilapidated structure will soon be dumped in Rensselaer’s Dunn Landfill, a development that has raised concerns among environmentalists.

Do you think NY ought to determine what is in the dust that blows from the Dunn Landfill into the the nearby school and community? We ask but never get an answer. Why? Do they know they will have to do something if they find out and that would mean the operation of the landfill would be in jeopardy?

Please consider submitting a comment to NYDEC on why Waste Connections should change the way it handles the Dunn Landfill's leachate. Comments can be emailed to: [email protected].
Use “Comments on Proposed Part 360 Series” in the subject line. Deadline: 5 p.m. Sept. 9, 2026.

We wonder if people in the NY State Capital or the DEC headquarters look at the view of the Dunn Landfill and feel proud of allowing it to exist next door to a school complex?

While we are proud that RI passed strong protections against toxic PFAS in 2024, we can see that damage was already done.
This is the human cost of inaction on PFAS and other toxic threats to drinking water.

NY Riverwatch has released its findings on waterways affected by landfill leachate. We need to stop collecting landfill leachate and transferring it to our waterways through our treatment plants. #PFAS

New, from me: New York is working on closing the "Leachate Loophole" that has allowed millions of gallons of toxic garbage water to flow into our drinking water every year, but environmentalists worry that the new regulations are themselves full of loopholes that would make them ineffective.

A byproduct of our failure to effectively recycle is an overreliance on landfills. REC continues to call for the passage of the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act.
