Official Bluesky account. Experimental publishing platform for the entire research process. Posts by Chris Hartgerink.
> So I am sending out a warning signal for the second time: If you want ResearchEquals to persist, it will take more support. Concretely, the support will need to come in the next 9 months.

Each person who signs up to ResearchEquals gets an email from us, asking them to tell us about their research.

This extra barrier helps us moderate spam and slop before it happens. But it also has become a rewarding pathway to learn about whom we are serving. 😊💌

Our platform runs for roughly €25/day — and anyone can publish on it for free.

The APC for a single paper could instead keep ResearchEquals online for months:
Nature: €10,000 → ~400 days
Scientific Data: €2,390 → ~96 days
PLOS Biology: $5,500 → ~190 days

DM us if your OA funds need more purpose 😉

Migrated our ATProto account from our self-hosted server to @eurosky.social – easy as eating cake! 🍰

Biggest hurdle was getting the migration code because emails were not set up on our self-hosted instance 😊

I’ve been loving seeing so many feminist, interdisciplinary and decolonial perspectives in open research, and I’ve got some work in progress in this area which feels exciting 🩷

More of this please and less of the surveillance and “automated” science

The US Supreme Court is making it even more urgent for institutions to migrate away from US owned infrastructure.

We're not affected as we manage ResearchEquals on European owned + located servers 🇪🇺

Efforts to federate research infrastructures should not reinvent the wheel. ResearchEquals seeks to federate with the Fediverse instead.

> By using ActivityPub to federate research publishing, the act of publishing becomes the act of distribution.

Writing isn’t about making yourself into a machine that produces text in the most efficient way.

It involves fermenting ideas, taking diversions, letting things evolve, going for a walk and drinking tea.

Maybe I can learn to enjoy & inhabit this process more by thinking about what it’s not.

We are making ResearchEquals safe by design – we now require manual approval of new accounts and can quarantine accounts upon suspicious activity.

This is about actively caring for the space we seek to create, not gatekeeping.

All genuine research practice remains welcome.
