I have mixed feelings about this article, but I was deeply disappointed by this statistic:
"nearly half of all women read just one novel or short story in 2022, but only one in four men did."
Women are giving their partners the ‘Illiterate Boyfriend’ test: ‘Do your best to pronounce these words’
People online are distressed at men butchering words such as ‘hyperbole’ and ‘hors d’oeuvres’ – highlighting a gender reversal in ‘intelligence gaps’

Today I lost my last shred of respect for Starmer when he chose to brutally upstage his successor by announcing he was leaving parliament on Burnham's first day in the House. A means meanspirited way to get your revenge.

From the Guardian: "The US accounts for more than 20% of global tissue consumption despite having only 4% of the world’s population."
Tissue meaning toilet paper.
Clearly there's an awful lot of 💩 needs wiping up in the US right now.

You can tell Burnham is an urbanite when he thinks reducing bus fares will help reduce the cost of living. Not for people in rural areas, where the bus service is virtually non-existent.

The hidden consequence of this is that schools are increasingly using newly qualified teachers to fill vacancies, and rejecting applications from experienced teachers because they cost too much. Great to encourage NQTs but leaching experience from schools.
Teachers in England get two-year 6.6% pay rise but schools to foot part of bill
Unions pleased with rise above forecast inflation but concerned nearly a third of it will come from school budgets

Sitting out on my tiny balcony as God evening cools, and very tempted to drag out a mattress for the night. But oh, the bugbites!

I'm getting increasingly aggravated by websites that ask you to indicate your age. There are categories for every decade, until 65+. when we are all lumped in together. I'm 74 and my situation is different from a 65 year old and an 85 year old. But on all polls we're not distinguished. #casualAgeism

All in a retired vicars day. Afternoon drinking tea and chatting with a recently bereavement clergy friend. Home to help my nephew attack the rusted padlock on the septic tank cover with an angle grinder so we can access it to empty it. #countryParson.

Ten days ago, I wrote this. Unbelievable contrast. Now I'm running fans all day to keep cool.
Admitted defeat. Put the heating back on. It's mid-June ffs. And people still don't take climate change seriously.

If this is reliable, it's unbelievably worrying. Our planet fried to death by AI crap. More credible that being blasted by Vogons to make space for a hyperspace bypass. But just as terrifying.
news.un.org/en/story/202... As we experience the worst heatwave we've had here, this week, this is an article to consider.
So, the superheating AI data centres that are the alleged answer to almost everything...

What exactly is going on, and who is asking the right questions about this?
AI’s environmental costs threaten water, land and climate
Artificial Intelligence is not only responsible for worrying amounts of earth-warming greenhouse gases: the technology's environmental footprint is also expanding at a pace that could strain the plane...

Today's Google Doodle for Father's day incorporates "radishes and carrots - a symbol of rooted strength, love, and protection.". Yes of course that's what they symbolise.

From the Guardian: "Trump said ... his relationship with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “good, but we have to keep him a little bit sane”.
No sense of irony then, Mr. President?

Election-speak: 'I can't be bothered to vote, they're all as bad as each other '. Translated: 'I can't be bothered to vote because I'm too lazy to think about the consequences if Reform win our by-election'. I hope my re-education conversation bore fruit and we have one less Reform in our Council.

Keir Starmer's response to Nigel Farage at PMQs just now was probably the most powerful and eloquent I have seen him in the Commons. The full answer is worth reading.

So all these Reform councils that are insisting on starting council meetings with the Lord's Prayer... if Christianity is so crucial to them, I hope they're also tipping up to their local church. And giving generously!

This is terrible news from the academic world.
Why would we want to learn from our pasts, or ponder the power of the written and spoken word, or explore the deep questions of humanity? According to the University of Hertfordshire, we wouldn't. They've just cut all of our undergrad Humanities programmes
