Future us will look back and realise that the countries who figure out how to manage and use immigration for our benefit are the ones which did the best.
I've felt many things as a "pro-immigration fanatic". Anger at the hate, division and bs spread by likes of the Telegraph mainly, but never "humiliation". The evidence is clear, and global, people move, people have always moved, people will always move, and that is an overwhelmingly positive thing.
From the BBC. [Sigh]

Maybe the mysterious blokes arrested near RAF Fairford were actually undercover estate agents?
The Conservatives are saying that no one will feel any safer without the B1s flying from Fairford. Maybe - but things for local residents sure will feel quieter...

I worked bars as a student and it was only because we had to walk around rather than stand in one place that I could stand it. I was sub-21. A ghastly and ridiculous policy.
TSA says it is removing chairs at document checks in airports, requiring staff to stand for their shift.

TSA explained the reason as twofold: to ensure its employees meet its fitness standards and to create an amiable environment for travelers.
TSA officers must now stand up on the job
The agency is removing chairs from document-checking stations.

Everyone's beaten down by the lying and cheating, and by the sense of general misery associated with this frankly awful administration.
"Voters have a regret or two, and we've seen this in poll after poll. The regret has grown since the beginning of Trump's presidency" -- Enten unpacks polling showing that Kamala Harris would easily beat Donald Trump if they were both on the ballot again next month

I'm not wishing to worry anyone but I'm not sure all the AI spending is going to be worth it. From a recent investor update by CCLA.

A magical building. The combination of huge windows and that ceiling is breathtaking.
King’s College Chapel, built between 1446 and 1515, Cambridge, England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿.

The curse of poor management and lack of quality systems and timely investment. When will we learn to do things properly? You can be sure there's no shortage of high vis and tea.
NEW As Govt prepares to free thousands of prisoners early I’ve discovered over 4,000 prison places are unused - due to damage, safety concerns or delayed repairs..
...and in 28 jails capacity has been set at LESS than usable places - staff shortages a factor:

Britain has an effectiveness problem. Any long term fix needs to start with the absolute basics of education, civic pride and social responsibility. We need to understand what quality means.

We waste so much time and opportunity on self indulgence rather than productivity.
Neoliberals want to end the triple-lock on state pension

They inflict low wages, consign millions to poverty.

Govt spending on state pension as % of GDP in G7 countries.

Italy 12.8
France 12
Germany 9.8
Japan 8.9
USA 6.6
Canada 4.7
UK 4.7

UK has one of the least generous pensions in the G7.
How does the UK State Pension measure up globally?
A global comparison of State Pension provision highlights the onus on individuals in the UK to build pension savings for their retirement, rather than leaving

Botley Road has reopened at the railway bridge after 1,258 days. The new bridge includes cycleways on each side and enough headroom for a full-height double decker to pass. An extra rail span on the western side will give access to a forthcoming Platform 5 at Oxford station.

The detail in Trump’s Air Force One photo is easy to miss. Look at what he’s holding.

That, Carney’s standing ovation, and Trump’s sharks-or-electrocution answer—in 95 seconds.

People want an efficient and reliable government to sort out life's basics. It's part of reducing the constant stress we all feel that's been caused to a significant extent by the rush to privatisation.

Today I learnt what oriel windows are and that Oriel College Oxford was originally named after such a window on an old building in the college.
Lovely little oriel window above the door on Candover Street.

25 years ago today I was headed to the airport in Austin TX to catch my flight home (via Boston). It was a beautiful September morning and the sun was coming up. I was listening to a new copy of 'Desire' by Bob Dylan. About an hour after take off I was puzzled to notice that we were turning around
