Regular followers will recall that in June I committed to buying only 12 bottles between then and June 2027. The fourth purchase has now been made—Ampersand Opimus Kentucky Bourbon, aged 15 years and finished in Tokaji casks. Another entry in the NDP 🦬🦃 era. I’ve heard good things. Cheers!

It’s that time. My quarterly dry week—to reset my palate, my body, and my brain. The NA beer game has much improved over the years, and this Rationale Japanese Style “beer” makes a great cap to the day. See y’all again October 8. Cheers—maybe with “beer,” maybe with coffee!

This is one that contributed greatly to my sherry fatigue, and helped me understand that scotch aged in first-fill sherry casks just isn’t my jam. But I put it to good use in many Rob Roy and other cocktails. Waste not want not. Sláinte!

A lovely single cask from Ardnamurchan courtesy of K&L that’s both elegant and robust. Creamy, malty, rich, sweet, all the things. Sláinte!

I’m a newly enlightened fan of The Black Lodge cocktail. The recipe calls for Cynar but I sub Fernet (recipe 📸2) and it makes for a suitably broody yet delightful cocktail. Cheers!

Getting toward the end of this absolutely fantastic old MGP rye bottled by Hughes Bros. Herbal, sweet, savory, and antique, and offered at half the price the same specs were commanding just a few years ago. Kinda wish I’d broken my No Bunkering rule for this one. Cheers!

Regular followers may recall that in June I committed to buying only 12 bottles between then and June 2027. Now the third purchase has been made—a cask strength single cask of Glen Garioch aged 27 years. Sláinte!

The Thompson Bros Mystery Malt series is a gamble. You don’t know what you’re buying, just trust the Thompsons’ tastes. Turns out I lost this round—a 4-year very sherried Raasay and I’m not into 🍷💣. My last Raasay was also young and unimpressive. I gave that bottle away. So, oh well. Sláinte…?

At first I found this single cask release from Isle of Harris Distillery to be fine—good, but overpriced. (I’d picked it up when it went on sale.) But over time it really grew on me. I enjoyed it neat and in cocktails like the Penicillin and Rob Roy. Sláinte!

What should I call this one? It uses the classic 5:1 martini ratio of Roku Gin to Bigallet China-China Amaro, garnished with orange zest. Tastes great, and look at that color! Any ideas for a name? Cheers!

Enjoying these last pre-Fall evenings out back as the light still lingers. This 2016 bottle of Henry McKenna is my last, and luckily it’s a good one. Like summer, it’s very near its end, so, savoring it while I still can. Cheers!

This ol’ Booker’s from late 2016 has finally met its end. It was a scorcher. Interestingly, over ice it wasn’t so great. But I thoroughly enjoyed it with a splash of water, neat, and in cocktails. (Use it in a Staggering Gentleman cocktail if you’ve not before—it’ll live up to its name!) Cheers!

This is the only Whiskey Barons release that made a significant impression. Still overpriced like its two predecessors in the series. But now that the brouhaha around it is several years past, I can appreciate this Wild Turkey riff for what it is—good bourbon. So long ol’ feller. Cheers!

Oooo this one has legit intrigue. Proper notes to come, but out of the gate I’ll say there’s a waltz going on here between dark fruit, coffee, and chocolate notes that is worthy of a dramatic mystery. Cheers!

I got out of the bunkering habit a while ago but I’m so glad I had the good sense to get a back up of this one. Thompson Brothers are doing great things to make blends cool again, and this bottle is an excellent example. Great neat and makes a killer Penicillin cocktail too. Sláinte!

The Staggering Gentleman is a potent cocktail that calls for high proof bourbon. I used Booker’s. To make it a bit more gentlemanly I served it in a fancy coupe rather than the usual tumbler. Still packs a wallop! Another good one for autumn. Cheers!
