At today's elementary school Halloween parade there was a girl in a fitted ringer tee with the Cranberries on it and we knew right away she was a 90s girl. Also eight Michael Jacksons! I was shocked at that. There were more MJs than Kpop demon hunters this year.

My mom's persimmon tree was productive this year! We got a dozen good sized fruits.

A reminder, because it is almost that time of year:

More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe...

If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe.

If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Today there was an electrical issue that caused a LOT of smoke to fill part of the convention center where BMES is being held. It disrupted the whole morning. When we were told to exit, we weren't told why, and I was like OMG I'm in Florida what if there's an active shooter. So that was fun.

We have an incredible October issue on in vitro systems, which was spearheaded by my amazing colleague Valeria Caprettini on my team. I'm just so proud of her and the issue for how beautifully it all came together.
We are thrilled to share our October issue, which is a Focus on modeling human tissue and disease in vitro and features some exceptional Reviews and two insightful editorials. Please check it out! www.nature.com/natbiomedeng...

I am looking forward to the BMES meeting next week in Orlando (I'm staying by myself at a resort hotel!), but I always kind of dread meetings so big that they require downloading their own app.

I've sort of always been aware of the ways in which I am weird, but it was only as an older adult that I realized I never met "my people" until graduate school, and why that might have made my adolescence lonely in ways that in the moment were imperceptible, because I always had friends.
QUESTION OF THE DAY:

This sounds like a joke question, but it isn’t.

If it doesn’t apply to you, fine. But it’s a serious question with different levels of meaning. And I am genuinely curious.

When did you first realize you were weird?

There is something sadly human about falling in love with AI, especially when it helps us. It helps (me) to think of them just as tools, as one would a hammer, but some people also get attached to their hammers.
The way heavy AI users develop emotional bonds with their algorithms (don’t turn it off or be rude to it, that’s cruel etc etc) is very Stockholm syndrome
