I think what is saddest about the accelerated destruction of public higher education in the 2020s is seeing the right-wing out-organize and out-strategize the left even as we on the left have thought so deeply about organization and strategy for decades.
Public universities have led the way in creating popular ethnic & gender studies programs, which are now being destroyed by aggressively regressive politicians & administrators, not because students aren't interested in these subjects, but because they are.

I don’t find this “AI won’t destroy humanity, people will destroy humanity (using AI)” argument all that comforting.
you can destroy the world with a random number generator if you hook it up to the nukes, but you need a guy to do that. sans human interaction language models do nothing. they cannot think. they're not getting any closer to thought. they never will

This depends on when my midlife was, I suppose. In my 30s, I quit academia and became a lawyer. In my 40s, I quit practicing law and became a professor. Now, in my 50s, I’ve taken up rock climbing again. (But honestly, none of those really felt like “existential crises.”)
What are you doing with your midlife existential crisis? No wrong answers. Just trying to see something, as the kids say.

I don’t know if the new Apple phone will do it well, but a foldable phone is obviously a good idea: small when it’s in your pocket, large when you are using it.
