Just in case anyone’s discovering me for the first time, I’m a photographer (from Canada, via NZ, in Sydney Australia) specialising in theatre & performing arts. And I write about the complexities of that, on my blog! It’s a funny old life, but I like it. robertcatto.com/photographin...

RNZ asked me to come up with a survey of Sir Sam Neill's career so here is "A Life in 10 Performances".

Sir Sam Neill: A life in ten performances
I hope these are a decent survey of a career that had so many high points, Dan Slevin writes.

The one time I came close to the great Sam Neill was at the Wellington premiere of The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers, in 2002; wish I'd had a chance to talk to him, but of course there was a queue of actual interviews for him to do, and no time to chat with every photographer in the lineup.

Sonny Rollins—who died this week, at 95—was a titan of the jazz scene, and I photographed him when he came to the Wellington Jazz Festival in New Zealand, in 2011. (He was ONLY eighty, then!)

My first time trying this guess-the-car game (where you can only see part of it at first), and I can’t decide if it’s good or bad that I was right about everything except the year on my first guess. (I was off by one.)

Nice to be back working with Well Done Creative on the poster for Head Over Heels at the Hayes Theatre, later this month. Great work by the graphic designer Kenney Designs--Gaz Dutlow is looking amazing thanks to Renee Taylor HMU, Ellen Simpson's direction, and Brendan de la Hay's costumes.

Before the new year truly takes over, I just wanted to do a quick look back at some of my highlights of 2025—and thanks to ALL the casts, directors, creatives & designers I couldn’t tag in each of these! Photos are as follows:

I know I'm constantly surprised by the passage of time, but still: how is it twenty years since Peter Jackson's King Kong premiered at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington?! And yet, here we are. More about that day on my blog…

For those who’ve followed my silent film research into Kiwi actor/director @rupertjulian.com over the past 20-25(!?) years now, this is the kind of unbelievable dream find I’ve always hoped for…!
Trying not to get TOO excited about this, BUT…unbelievably, segments of Rupert’s 1930 film The Cat Creeps have been found in an archive?!

“…although it's not complete, it does give us an overarching view of how the film looked from start to finish.”
