AFAIK, @jrossibarra.bsky.social doesn't have this color of hair naturally, but maybe if he starts using this product spotted at Target today?

I ❤️ "negative result" papers - and a very interesting observation from @patrickphillips.bsky.social group et al.!

More props to high school teachers. Imagine: you teach for 10 yrs. Starting yr 11, you might get invited to a 10-yr reunion. Each addl yr, you get an additional 10-yr invitation. Then start adding 20-yr or 25-yr reunions, etc. Pretty soon, your entire summer is filled with reunion invitations.

CNN headline doesn't make sense to me, based on looking at the recent trend…

While I resent feeling like I have to spend so much time this summer revising class assessments to "AI-proof" them, I also think it will vastly improve the classes by better emphasizing understanding of the process of science and when to be unsure (instead of just arriving at a correct answer)

And would readers be able to tell if somebody did the opposite and then flipped the image, which would be image manipulation? Curious if forcing convention could drive misconduct in some cases

These gel or blot image panels struck me as having too homogenous a background. Adjusting levels (R) reveals there is very little noise in the backgrounds. Also suspicious to me is a little bit of white halo around some bands (could it be compression artifact?) What do you think? #ImageForensics

Spent waaaay too much time this weekend sorting 1000s of stockpiled PDFs (citations to include in some upcoming pubs). A highlight, though, was trying to figure out why I decided to download "Pressures produced when 🐧💩" doi.org/10.1007/s003... #biomechanics #fluiddynamics
Pressures produced when penguins pooh—calculations on avian defaecation - Polar Biology
Chinstrap and Adélie penguins generate considerable pressures to propel their faeces away from the edge of the nest. The pressures involved can be approximated if the following parameters are known: (1) distance the faecal material travels before it hits the ground, (2) density and viscosity of the material, and (3) shape, aperture, and height above the ground of the orificium venti. With all of these parameters measured, we calculated that fully grown penguins generate pressures of around 10 kPa (77 mm Hg) to expel watery material and 60 kPa (450 mm Hg) to expel material of higher viscosity similar to that of olive oil. The forces involved, lying well above those known for humans, are high, but do not lead to an energetically wasteful turbulent flow. Whether a bird chooses the direction into which it decides to expel its faeces, and what role the wind plays in this, remain unknown.

May we also have accessible versions for protanopes, deuteranopes and tritanopes please? 🌈 #colorblind
Three studies determined structures and performed complementary modeling and biochemical experiments for human and nonhuman primate opsins, providing molecular insight into how visual pigment absorption and activation kinetics are tuned.

A parting ? on clear communication to others, public, & especially our students: how much does consistency and clarity matter? I'm thinking a lot recently about graphical representations of double stranded DNA. In #PEQG26 talks I saw (most, not all), here's how dsDNA was drawn & # of times (1/5)

One of my fave photos from #PEQG26 so far, just outside Merrill Hall this morning. If the botanically inclined would like a photo of dodder that @petrelharp.bsky.social pointed out to me this morning, I will add that!

Happy to share work from my lab tonight: an attentive grad student found that intra-species F1 🪱 hybrids have high nondisjunction - thus more XO males. Maybe speciation in action! No data on mechanism yet - what's your best guess? 🧐 Look for tic-tac-toe poster 205W: the next move is yours! #PEQG26

It is true: pretend you are an automobile and want to park underground. This may go down as the loudest poster session in history!
For anyone else at #PEQG26 who might be confused, the "fireside pavilion" where the poster sessions are happening is parking lot D on your map

Didn't know there deer at Asilomar! Wake up early and see them for yourself. Fan fact: the muntjac (a type of deer) has the fewest chromosomes of any mammal: 2n=6! www.molecularcytogenetics.org/content/4/1/22 #PEQG26 #themoreyouknow

Never realized Asilomar's Merrill Hall was decorated with wormstars (e.g. www.researchgate.net/figure/erde1...). C. elegans 🪱 is everywhere! #peqg26
