I am convinced the world's most accurate personality test would be making someone learn a language and recording all the mnemonics they devise to remember the words.

I'm sorry, what metric is there for whether prose is good *except* whether humans like it?

I stumbled across this photo from 1983-ish, no idea who took it, from Kazakhstan near Baikonur. It is basically the plot to one of my favorite books, “The Day Lasts More Than A Hundred Years” by Chinghiz Aitmatov.

I grew up on the Cook Inlet, and I promise you: the Yanks have already done enough to ruin the place since they bought it without adding this.
ICYMI: Beluga whales need your help!

The Cook Inlet, where these sensitive whales live, is being eyed as the new home for an underwater #DataCenter.

The noise alone could spell destruction for these precious animals! Don't let Cook Inlet belugas become the latest casualty of the #AI boom.
Save Cook Inlet Belugas From an Underwater Data Center
The Trump administration is considering a preliminary permit application for an underwater data center in Alaska, right in the middle of critical habitat for endangered Cook Inlet beluga whales. Tell ...

I genuinely think most Westerners believe they invented colour, sunshine, and art, and that they magnanimously introduced these to Eastern Europe for the very first time after the Wall fell.
The NYT's Moldova photo essay called an elected official "a teacher," styled a fashion designer and a film student to look like Soviet factory workers, and opened with "gray" to describe the sunniest month Chisinau had all year.

Why is Armenian the best language for erotic fiction? Because the word for page is էջ.

My new piece in @publicorthodoxy.bsky.social, in which I say deeply unpopular things about AI but reassure the reader that I am a Very Serious Theologian™ by talking about fairies.
As a Stranger: Orthodox Encounter with AI
Few lines of Shakespeare are as oft-repeated as Hamlet’s “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, / than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” It is fit for our present, when the world overthrows itself daily and undreamt-of things proliferate to the point of banality. Among these, artificial intelligence seems to rouse the...

I know the USSR had its seediness & corruption & brutality, but it is often hard—as someone born at its end—not to see it in retrospect as a remarkably wholesome place.

Look at this guy: "You go have fun, honey. I'll take the baby with me when I go down to the park to play chess with the boys."

Thrilled to have two poems in the latest lovely issue of @birdcoatquarterly.bsky.social. Thank you to Anna Sandy Elrod for choosing "fade" and "on wind", both writings from my Colorado heart.

In Armenian, we use the same word—վանդակ / vandak—to mean both a cell (as in a spreadsheet) and a cage (as for a bird), and as an office worker, I think that's beautiful.

Being a writer is hell. You wake up with a long to-do list, then somebody offhand mentions a Greek myth & suddenly there is *nothing* you have to do as much as write an Armenian poem about an Ottoman Sufi master's tomb on Lemnos (y'know, before you forget) & everything else will just have to WAIT.

This map does NOT show a US annexation of Iceland. Hear me out:

1) The discontiguous blue field in Greenland indicates that new European territories are marked by their own overlaid flag (not the [mostly] continuous one covering North American possessions).

2) Iceland has no blue field...
