It is so so so so so so unbelievably evil to manufacture an abuse-enabling product, and then intentionally chain that product to the function of a disability aid as a marketing / regulatory delay tactic. It blows my mind how evil that is. Meta is the worst

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment.

For the millionth of times - the idea that a computer program can "feel" or "suffer" is just stupid.
Promoting this idea is in the best case a cynical attempt to create the perception of human-like capabilities of these models (to increase the preceived value of these pieces of software)
Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment.

I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this:

What a beauty!
Some 3,400 years ago, an Egyptian artisan captured a sense of speed and elegance in this beautifully carved handle in the shape of a horse! 🐴 ❤️

Anthropic wrote that the new policy update “is meant to apply only in extreme cases, where users repeatedly act cruelly toward our models, with no discernible purpose. It does not apply to common versions of user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research.”
Anthropic bans ‘abusive or cruel behavior’ towards Claude
The usage policy update also adds new rules addressing propaganda campaigns, surveillance, and weapon development.

It is this cult called Longtermism.
Sam Altman: We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology. I do think the lighter touch regulatory stance we advocate for comes with an accepting of the fact that some bad things are going to happen.

Good piece by Paul Krugman. It includes data about the actual retirement age in EU countries (from Eurostat). Data from Austria felt strange (but from Eurostat, 2023) - 59.6 years on average. Did a quick web search that showed different data:
