With the Vitality Blast ‘block’ of fixtures about to commence, it seems a good time to reflect on the first domestic limited overs league competition, the John Player League:

“Before the coloured kits, pyrotechnics and musical interludes, county sides met each weekend over 40 overs per side

A guess a lot people will be spending a lot of today checking some slowly changing numbers on a BBC webpage.

If you enjoy that sort of thing and want it to be a more than annual occurrence - can I recommend getting into county cricket?

John Player League
On This Day: 27 April 1969

Where it all began 57 years ago.
The opening matches took place in the new Player’s County League. The honour of being the first teams to appear on television fell to Middlesex and Yorkshire, at Lord’s.

Delighted that Patrick Eagar’s wonderful photograph of a John Player League match in progress at Dean Park, Bournemouth graces the cover of my new book.

39 JPL fixtures were played here, Gordon Greenidge and Barry Richards both scoring centuries on 2 occasions.

Quality from Surrey. @kiaoval.com repeatedly shows Championship cricket the way forward. Time for other county clubs to learn and upgrade what in some cases is their utterly dismal Wi-fi.
The best home office in the country?

We've upgraded our WiFi over the winter and there are terraces around the ground with pitch views and desk access 💻

See you there and we won't tell your boss 🤫

Anyone picking up a copy of this quarter’s Nightwatchman can read my article, marvelling at the performances of Indian teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi but asking whether he could have done it on a wet Sunday afternoon in Tring.
