Wildcat conservation and recovery in Scotland 🐾

Working with communities to bring the Highland tiger back from the brink of extinction 🧡
A wildcat’s stripes are unique, like fingerprints, even as kittens 🐾

Although a wildcat's markings change as it matures, key traits tend to remain consistent.

This helps the team identify kittens, born to released wildcat females, that reappear on the trail cameras as dispersed juveniles 📸

1/4 Wildcat recovery in Scotland would not be possible without the support and contributions of the UK conservation breeding programme ✨

As hybridisation (interbreeding with domestic cats) began escalating in the 1970s, wildcats in captivity were protected from the threats facing those in the wild.

Part of the bigger picture 📸

Wildcats are just one of thousands of Scottish species that play a key role in a healthy, functioning ecosystem.

1/2 A little lesson in camouflage… 🫥

A wildcat’s brown fur and dark stripes make spotting them in thick vegetation very tricky. Their ability to ‘disappear’ is helpful when they’re hunting and can protect kittens from potential predation 🐾

But this only works if they stay still!
