This beautiful, surreal film is a masterpiece of stop motion. It's one of the very best by director Hermína Týrlová.

Our new issue looks into The Blue Apron, and into Týrlová's love of putting life into mundane objects:

I got to draw some storyboards and animation for this!!

To be able to say I contributed to a MSA video is a sincere honor, and it means so much to me that the crew were excited to let me help pitch in on such a big milestone. 💖

"Goodbye to the System" • SKY-HI x SALU #inktober #plantober
Mixed media illustration of J-rap artists Sky-Hi (right) and Salu (left) (both inked traditionally and colored digitally). Sky-Hi leans against a tall window lined with rows of elaborate colorful patterns (scanned washi tape, digitally composited). His demeanor is downcast and melancholic, contemplating over something dear that he had to let go. There is regret, hurt, and a glimpse of broken trust and betrayal in his eyes. Salu stands to the side with a similar somber expression, quietly joining Sky-Hi in reflection of the past and even the present. Across the windows are large silhouetted close-ups of redwood leaves (digitally drawn). If you read this far in, hey, thanks. :) Normally I'd be writing funny alt text because I find joy in adding a touch of my own personal humor into something that would otherwise feel like it'd dampen the heart and soul of my art. This time though, I want to make sure I have a place to preserve the intent of the piece, in case that somehow gets lost in translation, especially in something more poignant. This is sort of my first time really doing a melancholic piece for this annual tradition of mine. I liked the song just well when it first came out, but as this year went on and found new ways to crush my heart, I eventually found further meaning in how it feels to let go of something you loved, regardless of how far in the journey was. When the things you loved and thought you knew shatter, and then enough times before it becomes sharp powder... The fragments went deeper than you thought. Anyway, regardless of the numbers for this post, I hope you too find time to continue creating for yourself and expressing what needs to be let out and let go. Art is many things, and it's an all-time vehicle to show what you're feeling when words fail, or at least try your best to. Keep on creating, keep making stuff with your own hands! And have a happy and safe October too! :)
