It activated something primal in her, an instinct that told her she was in danger. Nia’s body froze. Slowly, as if being very still could keep her safe, she scanned Lawrence, searching for whatever it was that had set off alarm bells. The first thing she saw was his hand. His fingernails, which had been neat and blunt before, had extended into steely, talonlike points. Razor-sharp. Lawrence’s knuckles were white where he gripped his knee, as if he was restraining himself. Nia kept searching, eyes drawn upward. Lawrence’s eyes were wide, the pupils dark and deep. Like a cat about to pounce. Or maybe something larger than a cat. But that wasn’t the worst of it. No, the worst part was the two fangs peeking out from the corners of Lawrence’s mouth. His lips parted revealing a row of teeth, jagged and white as a shark’s.

I get the appeal of comforting, therapized characters in turbulent times. But I cannot relate. I want to see a catastrophe of a person throwing themself at a brick wall even though the door is right there, wide open, and easy to walk through. Trainwreck representation matters!

This has been a slowly metastasizing moral panic for years: Liberals, drunk on therapy-speak, are cutting off their parents over minor slights and miscommunications.

There is little evidence of the underlying phenomenon and even less of the cause. Look at this egregiously thin nut graf.
Although exact figures are scarce, the number of people cutting off close kin — particularly children cutting off parents — appears to be rising. Some speculate that therapists offering a speciously easy solution to a seemingly untenable problem are to blame

reading classic books in high school is really important because you can catch yourself mid-therapy and say "wow I sound like Holden Caulfield right now" and fast-forward through your Catcher in the Rye bullshit to figure out what's really bothering you
